What if my child finishes his book before the week is up?

Great question!!! Here at Traver we have daily book exchange. That means
that as soon as your child finishes his book he can bring it back and get a
new one. Believe it or not, I have had some children do this the very same
day!! However, please keep in mind that coming to the library on a non
library day depends largely on the classroom teacher's daily routine. It may
not fit in everyday, but most teachers encourage their children to get to
the library at least one other day during the week. So I hope to see your
child more than just once a week.

What if my child forgets her book on library day?

This is a great opportunity to talk to your child about responsibility.
Finding a safe and consistent place for library books, helps you to find
them when you need them. But honestly, it happens- even to me! We are all
busy and as organized as we try to be, we all forget sometimes. Your child
will not be punished or reprimanded in any way, but will not be allowed to
take a new book until the old one is returned. You will receive a note about
the late book, but this is just a reminder - not a judgement. There are no
fines for late books. While the other children our selecting and checking
out new books during class, your child will be given something else to do.
In the beginning of the year this may be doing a puzzle or looking at an "I
Spy" book with a friend. As the year progresses, your child will go right to
her center and begin the given task for that day. Your child's forgotten
library book can be returned the next day and she will be allowed to get a
new one. If you have any problems or concerns please call me.

What if my child looses his book?

This is a great time to talk about responsibility. Keep your books in a safe
and consistent place will help you fine them when you need them.
Unfortunately it does happen. What I ask is that you write or call me and
let me know the situation. I ask you to look at least one more time before
giving up. Lost books "appear" in the most unusual places. If you feel the
book is truly lost, just let me know. I do not want to deny your child the
opportunity to pick a new book. I do not ask you to pay a fine or replace
the book. If you would like to replace it, I would appreciate the gesture,
but you do not have to. I will often suggest that your child choose a book
from his own collection to donate to the library to replace the lost one.

What if my child's library book gets damaged?

If your child's library book gets damaged in any way (ripped, torn, wet, or
the dog ate it)please send it back to school. Please do not repair books at
home. We use special materials here in the library and my clerk is trained
in book repair. You may place the book in a separate baggie so that all the
pieces stay together or if wet- it doesn't get everything else wet.
Your child will never be blamed for a damaged library book. Sometimes the
damage goes unseen and is later discovered by very consciencious
individuals.
All I ask is that the damage is brought to my attention and that all repairs
are done here. If you feel responsible for the damage you may replace the
book. I do not ask you to pay for it and replacement is optional. Often I
will suggest that the child select a book from her own collection that she
would like to donate to the library in exchange for the damaged copy.

Can I donate books to the library?

Yes! Absolutely!! Whether they are from your own "outgrown but loved"
collection or brand new (see my wish list on Amazon.com) we gladly take your
donation. Each book will get a book plate showing that your child gave the
gift of reading to their shcool library. If you are donating from your
personal collection please know that I may not need an additional copy of a
particular book. So I will often pass donations on.
There are many worthwhile organizations in need of children's books. If you
do not want your personal copies "passed on" please let me know and I will
return them to you.
