What
is it?
The
5th Grade Book Club is a group of readers who enjoy reading for a
hobby. We meet every month to discuss a book read by everybody the previous
month.
When
does it meet?
We
meet one Wednesday morning a month, most often the third Wednesday, in the
library. We
start at 7:45 a.m and go until the bell rings at 8:20 a.m. signaling the start
of school. The last meeting, in May, will be a pizza party book and movie
comparison the will be held AFTER school.
Since
Spring is a busy time of year for many people, we will choose that date later
in the year
Who
runs it?
Mrs.
Hauptmann, the school librarian runs the meeting and is in charge of ordering
the books and leading the discussion.
How
do I get the book?
Mrs.
H will preorder the books. You will bring $5 to each meeting to purchase the
book. The book is yours to keep.
What
kinds of books will we read?
A
wide variety of primarily fiction: adventure, mystery, historical fiction,
etc. Some will have male main characters; some will have female main
characters. I try really hard to find books you have not read before.
Do
I have to be a really good reader?
No,
you do not. As long as you can read the book in some way, you can be part of
book club. You can have a parent read to you, you can listen to an audio
version or you can do a combination of both, or read it yourself!
What
will we talk about?
We
will talk about lots of things pertaining to the book. We may discuss the
characters and their personalities, what we liked or didn’t like, the author’s
writing style, the author themselves, what was the action like in the book,
our favorite parts OR we might discuss what we DON’T like about the book.
Perhaps there will something about the book you don’t like!
How does it work?
You will get a permission slip
that has to be signed by a parent. The
first meeting will be in October 21st to get our first book and go over the
procedures and ‘rules’ of the club. Please bring $5
to this meeting and to every meeting to purchase your book.
We will take turn providing
snacks each month and I will provide the hot chocolate, juice and paper
products for each meeting.
Starting in November you will
come at 7:45 a.m. to the library. We will get our snacks and beverage and then
sit down to discuss the book. At the end of the meeting we will clean up, pay
our $5, and get our book for the next month.
Is there anything else I need
to know?
Yes, this is a commitment and as
such, I would hope that if you join, you stay with it to the end, try your
hardest to read and finish the book, and come on time and ready to talk about
it.
If you are in M.O.R.E. you may
have a conflict that you will have to make a decision about. On occasion you
will have to decide if you are going to miss a M.O.R.E. meeting or a book club
meeting. At this time, I believe that Chess Club will NOT be a conflict, as it
most likely will be on Fridays.
I will update my Teacher Web
account with information about our meetings each month. You can download this
document if you need it or the permission slip if you need and extra one.
