Why so much homework?
Homework gets kids responsible- by bringing it home, getting it done neatly
and accurately and then returning it to school on time, it builds a skill
necessary for the future in middle school and beyond.
What happens if I forget my homework at home?
Homework left at home is considered an incomplete. If it didn't make it back
here on time, it wasn't fully completed. There will be no calls home for
parents to bring it in. "Let the chips fall..." is the motto. Pack
everything the night before to help avoid this problem. West Road School
might be five minutes from home but a trip to AMS or LMS for homework
forgotten is another story. Let's break the "I FORGOT" habit this year!
Do we really need to do a project each month??
OF COURSE! Learning to research, budget time, work with others in a
cooperative group, prepare a paper, produce a scene, build a multi-media
presentation- all of these projects build a more creative person, a better
student and it gives a variety of experiences in many areas. You never know
what's coming in middle school. A little taste of the future never hurt
anyone!
Should there be tears at homework time?
NEVER! Kids have a job to do but like everyone, they too can feel
overwhelmed. What's the worst that can happen if homework isn't finished??
Bring in what's done, explain the situation and see if recess missed is
really all that bad. If you can't get the work done during the day, then we
need to revisit how class time is being spent. One note- you can't save all
your class work for home. Now that would bring tears!
What happens if my report or project isn't ready on the due date?
No credit, no recess, note home- all of the above most likely. A due date is
given well in advance . If failure to complete a project is a bad habit, the
student will be required to finish the project on his/her home time,
classtime or recess time. Missing a project is a big problem.
Should my child be using the planner every day?
When there are six different subjects to keep track of, a planner helps with
organization. Planners need to be used everyday by all students. If homework
becomes an issue, I will check and sign the planner every day and request
that the parent do the same every night.
