December 23, 2009

Wow! We made it to the December Break!  That’s almost mid-year –yikes!  Time is flying by!!!!!!  I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their constant support.  I wish you all a very relaxing, safe, and enjoyable Christmas and New Year!  I know that we are all certainly deserving of a week off to take time to sit back and enjoy our families and friends.

In social studies students have been taught all of the four regions of the USA –the western states, southern states, middle states, and northeastern states.  Students should be practicing locating and naming all fifty states and their capitals on a map of the United States.  Attached is a complete map as well as a blank one for your child to practice.  When we return in January I will be giving a ten minute quiz twice a week where students will have to fill in as many states and capitals as they can on a blank USA map.

Students will also be studying two states after the vacation.  They will be doing the “State Map and Border” research in class.  At home they will be creating a “State Suitcase” on another state.  The details of the “State Suitcase” project is attached if your child would like to get started.  It will be due on or before Monday, February 1st.

Our “Great Map Race” continues.  Already we have postcards from ten states.  Over the vacation please contact your friends and relatives who live in the USA so that they can send you postcards from their home states.  Thank you!

In science to wrap up our studies of the human body, we have two more systems left:  immune and endocrine which we will learn about in January.

Extra help will start back up on Tuesday, January 5th.  Please remember to write a note of permission for your child and pick him/ her up promptly at 4:30 from our classroom.

The December "Holiday Gift Bag" book reports were amazing!  The children enjoyed presenting them, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening.  Currently I am working on grading them.  You will get the grade sheet the first week back in January.  Your child should now choose a science-fiction book to read for the January “Pizza” book report.  It is due on or before Monday, January 25th.  The book report bash will be held on Thursday, January 21st.  Please plan on having your child attend.

I still need a parent volunteer to assist me with putting together the holiday memoirs into a book.  Please drop me a note or e-mail me if you are willing to help out with this.

A big thank you goes out to all of those parents who assisted with our “Welcoming Winter” celebration yesterday.  The children had a blast!  Thank you also to all the parents who helped choose, buy, and wrap Secret Jack Frost gifts.  The kids absolutely LOVED this activity.  It’s one of those things that past students recount to me when I see them years down the line.  I’m sure your child will agree that he/ she really enjoyed it!  =)

Thank you all for the generous gift card.  I will be using it when I visit New York City over the break.  I can’t wait to see a Broadway show!  Also, thank you to all those students who gave me individual gifts.  I distributed “Thank You” notes to them today.

We cleaned out desks and cubbies today.  Students need a few supplies for the New Year.  It would be greatly appreciated if your child could bring in the following things:  one marble composition notebook and a sturdy plastic folder.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Fondly,

Mrs. Moschetto
