Wow! Hanukkah starts this evening, and Christmas is only thirteen days away! Time certainly is flying by!
Today was our student teacher, Miss Arlick’s final day. She treated students to some Hanukkah treats, and taught us how she and her family celebrates this great miracle of light. Our class also presented her with a canvas tote bag that they decorated and signed so that she will always remember us! We certainly wish Miss Arlick well as she completes her studies at Vassar College this spring and goes on to pursue a teaching career.
In social studies students are memorizing the Southern States and their capitals. A quiz will be given on Thursday, December 17th. A map is included in the "Weekly News & Notes" packet for your child to study for this quiz.
Next week we will be starting our “Great Map Race.” An instruction sheet is attached. Students will collect postcards from the various fifty states. We want to see how many states we can collect. Can we beat last year’s record of 38? I hope so!
In science we are completing our studies of the nervous system. Students will have a short quiz on Friday, December 18th. We will also be reviewing the various body systems that we studied thus far. We have two more systems left: immune and endocrine which we will learn about in January.
I will be staying after on Tuesday, December 15th and December 22nd for extra help. Please remember to write a note of permission for your child and pick him/ her up promptly at 4:30 from our classroom.
Mid-marking period progress reports will go home next week. Please review it with your child, sign, and send back the attached cover sheet, please.
Students should now be reading a holiday book for their December "Holiday Gift Bag" book report which is due on Monday, December 21st.
The Book Report Bash is scheduled for Friday, December 18th. To participate, students should read their entire book and write the rough draft of each of their paragraphs to bring to the book report bash. If you would like your child to participate please send in a note of permission and be sure to pick up your child promptly from our classroom at 4:30PM that day. Snacks are needed for this event. If you would like to contribute chips, brownies or cookies please drop me a note or an e-mail ASAP.
We did not have a chance to begin writing our holiday memoirs, but we will be starting on Monday. Please read make sure that your child has a holiday memory ready to share and write about. They will be writing the first draft this week.
Reminder: Our December holiday celebration entitled “Welcoming Winter” will be held on Tuesday, December 22nd. Students should have brought home a paper explaining the “Secret Jack Frost” activity that we will be doing from Wednesday, December 16th through the 22nd. Each student will have a “Secret Jack Frost” whom they will bring in anonymous gifts for each day costing between one to five dollars. The gifts should be wrapped and have the student’s name clearly written on them. On Tuesday, December 22nd –the day of our party- they should bring in a larger gift costing no more than ten dollars for their Secret Jack Frost. Students will reveal their identities at the party that day.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.
Fondly,
Mrs. Moschetto
