Once in awhile I will ask students to bring something in from home for an
upcoming art project. I will send a note home if this happens.
What I think every student could benefit from is practice cutting with
scissors. Old magazines are great for this purpose. Rip a page out of the
magazine and then practice cutting around objects, animals or people as
carefully as possible. Hold the scissors still and move the picture you are
cutting to navigate the shape.
Another great idea is to keep a small sketch pad available for car rides
or sitting on the sidelines while a brother or sister plays in a sports
event, or waiting rooms. They should practice drawing what is going on around
them rather than relying on what is in their head. The more they practice the
better they get. When you are sketching, there are no "mistakes". It should
be fun. Written notes next to the sketches are a wonderful way to remember
the who, what and where of the sketch.
