Reading The Student will:
- Acquire decoding skills, including:
-Long, short vowels -Digraphs and diphthongs -Beginning blends and ending blends -Vowel pairs (Spelling workbook also reinforces these skills.)
- Be introduced to additional concepts:
-Contractions -Compound words -Nouns, verbs, adjectives -Synonyms, antonyms, homonyms
- Use a variety of reading strategies
(phonics, pictures, syntax, context)
- Increase vocabulary skills and level of oral reading fluency and expression
- Identify plot, characters and events in a story
- Retell sequence and main idea of a story-- Identify beginning, middle, and end.
- Learn dictionary skills

Math The Student will:
- Master addition and subtraction facts up to 18
- Read and write numerals to 999
- Be familiar with 2 and 3-digit regrouping in addition and subtraction
- Tell time to 5-minute intervals
- Identify coins by name and value in problem solving
- Use fractions of whole: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4
- Identify shapes and solids
- Use a various means of measurement
- Understand multiplication as 'repeated addition'
Penmanship The Student will:
- Use the proper 'top to bottom, left to right' formation of letters and numbers in printing

- Write to convey meaning
- Create descriptive sentences
- Use simple capitalization rules in writing
- Use grammar rules in writing
- Create an original story with a beginning, middle, and end.
- Use correct spelling of common words in writing and in tests
- Practice a variety of creative writing:
-Friendly letter -Poetry -Personal narrative -Fiction |
Social Studies The Student will:
- Learn about communities in the U.S.
- Learn basic map skills
- Learn about various holidays celebrated in the U.S.
- Be introduced to some prominent U.S. historical figures
Science/Themes The Student will learn appropriate concepts from the following curriculum areas:
- Butterflies
- Simple Machines
- Solar System
- From Seed to Plant
