Third Grade

Reading

The Student will:

  • be familiar with and enjoy various types of literature (e.g. mystery, poetry, biography)
  • demonstrates an ability it read orally with expression
  • begin developing reference skills (dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, etc.)
  • increase word attack skills and use of context clues
  •  use a variety of strategies to gain meaning (context clues, ponics, structural analysis, syntax, punctuation cues and illustrations)
  • self correct using meanings, knowledge of language structure, and sound/symbol relationships
  • retell beginning, middle and ending of a story, using details from the text
  • identify main idea of a passage
  • read silently for extended periods
  • follow written directions with some guidance-
Math
The Student will:
  • add and subtract up to four digit numbers
  • understand plce value by reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers through four digits
  • round to the nearest ten, hundred, dollar
  • estimate sums, differences and products by rounding
  • count money and change
  • tell time to the minute and use a calendar
  • learn multiplication and division facts through 10 X 10
  • multiply up to one digit by three digits
  • identify shapes, segments and angles
  • locate number pairs on a grid
  • use customary and metric units to measure capacity, length and weight
  • find perimeter, area, and volume
  • investigate probablity
  • understand fractions as part of a whole
  • add and subtract simple decimals
  • problem solve, using various strategies to solve work problems

 

Writing
The Student will:
  • be able to express personal feelings, reactions and interests
  • Write a fiction story
  • create an account of real events and observations
  • explain in writing how to do a task
  • use all aspects of the writing process
  • write poems to describe events and express feelings

In grammar and usage

The student will:

  • use capital letters to begin sentences and for proper nouns
  • use proper punctuation
  • construct meaningful sentences with noun/verb agreement
  • identify nouns, pronouns,verbs and adjectives
  • construct paragraphs limited to one topic

Social Studies
The Student will:
  • identify continents and oceans
  • locate equator, poles and prime meridian
  • use directional notation
  • read and interpret maps
  • understand similarities and differences of people in various communities
  • be familiar with community rules and laws
  • understand the importance of patriotic holidays
  • explore the relationship between how people live and their physical environment   

 Computer:

The student will:

  • learn to log on and off the file server
  • continue to improve word processing skills
  • use encarta to find information
  • increase knowledge of geography by using Zip Zap Map

 

 Science/Themes
The Student will learn appropriate concepts from the following curriculum areas:

  • Mystery powders: investigation of the properties of common household substances
  • plan life cycles
  • bouyancy: an exptension of float/sink
  • birds: characteristics and habitats
  • oceanography: ecology of the Long Island Sound
The Student will:
  • apply phonics rules
  • master lists of words by memorization
  • apply learned spelling words in daily work
  • begin identifying misspelled words and self correcting them

 

In Speaking and Listening

The Student will:

  • organize thoughts before speaking
  • answer all questions in complete sentences
  • retell an event or story sequentially with detail
  • develop public speaking skills 
  • Utilize the computer to reinforce language arts and math skills
