Fifth Grade

Reading
The student will:
  • Read for meaning using a variety of skills
  • Compare and contrast authors' styles
  • Understand parts of a story, including plot, character development, time/place setting
  • Use resource material to write a report on a topic
  • Read to create a response which includes specific details from a story
  • Share reading experiences with others
  • Respond in writing to myths, fables, fiction, non-fiction, and a personal account: essay, journal, letter
Writing and Language Arts.
The student will:
  • Write to convey meaning, using the writing process
  • Edit and revise writing for meaning as well as spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Use a variety of literary styles, including simile, metaphor, and flashback
  • Write for specific purposes, such as a business letter
  • Develop competency writing in a variety of genres which may include fiction, non-fiction and poetry
  • Uses word processing skills to edit and improve writing
Math
The student will:
  • Use problem-solving to investigate and understand mathematical content
  • Perform operations with whole numbers, mixed numbers, fractions, and decimals
  • Use measurement, both metric and standard
  • Study geometry to identify geometric figures, as well as to understand concepts of area, volume, and perimeter
  • Interpret and design graphs
  • Understand place value
Science
The student will learn through hands-on, inquiry-based methods, by posing questions, seeking answers and developing solutions, in the study of:
  • Physical Science: Sound and Light
  • Life Science:
    -The Human Body
    -Pond Life
    -Botany
    -Animal Responses.
Social Studies
The student will focus on the study of the Western Hemisphere, with emphasis on:
  • Geographic, economic and social/cultural understandings
  • The United States, Canada, and Latin America
  • Some political and historical understandings
Computer
The student will:
  • Use Student Writing Center for Word Processing
  • Use computer as a research tool using Encarta and the Internet
  • Use computer to complement the math program
  • Use technology to enhance the curriculum
