Meeting Minutes

Overlook-Titusville PTA 
Meeting  9/8/08 @ Titusville, 7:00pm

In attendance:  Jeanine Turenchalk, Leslie Battistoni, Dot Milliot, Adrienne 
O’Shea, Kim Baright, Sharon Baginski, Annamaria Solanto, Maragret Maier, 
Debra Dugal, Carrie Green, Branka Bryan, Brady Fister, Leslie Cuso, Cathy 
Mahon, Heidi Reale, Stacey Alben, Patricia Moran, Michele Mahoney, Lisa 
Bologna, Dan Shornstein, Barb Adams

PTA President Jeanine Turnechalk welcomes all to the first PTA meeting of 
the year.  Encouraged membership and involvement. Thanked all those involved 
in PTA Welcome Back breakfast and PTA activities already in place.

Comments from the Principals
Dr. Brady Fister (Overlook) reports good start to school year. New policy of 
a letter home if student is absent without a note. This should result in 
less “unexcused absences” and consequently more state aid monies.  Lots of 
emphasis on Overlook RAP. Thanks the PTA for the Welcome Back breakfast.

DanShornstein offered discussion of Titusville PRIDE.  Parent Night this 
Wednesday at 6:30pm.  Allison Krauss from Lagrange Library will present on 
partnership with the school.  Rachel Klein out on maternity, replaced by 
Mrs. Christopher.  Introduced Carrie Green as TIS staff in attendance. 

Reports from PTA Executive Committee 
A. 	Treasurer: Leslie Battistoni introduced budget 2008/08 budget.  
Explanation of new budget reporting system. According to PTA Council (and 
State PTA) changes are necessary in our current budget reporting layout. 
(i.e. Need to report expenses within Income line items.)  Motion to accept 
budget was made by Mrs. Milliot. Seconded by Cathy Mahon.  Motion carried. 
Modification in reporting procedures to be presented at next meeting. Leslie 
explained expense and income voucher forms.
B.	Membership: Stacey Alben introduced as VP of Membership.  Encouraged 
membership. Reported efforts to encourage membership.
C.	Secretary: Barb Adams introduced as Secretary. Reported that minutes 
will be posted to the website for review.
D. 	Ways & Means: Lisa Bologna introduced as VP of Ways & Means.  
Efforts made this year to make fund raisers efforts affordable.  
Entertainment Book. Cost $20. Sales begin end of September.
Gift cards sales  early November.
Hannaford Helps Schools program.  Coupons collected and money reimbursed to 
school. School with the most coupons receives an addition  $1,000. 
Pizzera Uno days scheduled  for November 13th and 14th 
Barnes & Noble day scheduled for November 29th 

	Branka Bryant introduced as coordinator of Fall Fund Raiser.

New Business
Jeanine explained that Correspondence binders are available in the school 
offices. All PTA paperwork are found in the binders.
All PTA correspondence is on BLUE paper.
Jeanine using PTA email distribution list.
PTA website offers valuable information.
Always check PTA closets for supplies before buying new.
Coat drive coming up. Set aside gently used coats.
Arlington Central Office looking for volunteers to sit on News,  Safety Team 
and Facilities Health & Safety Committee. Anyone interested should see 
Jeanine.
Nomination Committee will be active in seeking replacements for Executive 
Committee for next year.  Motion made for Barb Adams to serve as Nomination 
Chairperson.

Reports from Standing Committees
Jeanine reviewed Standing Committees.
BLT: Dorothy Milliot volunteered to serve on BLT at TIS.
Arts in Ed:  OPS has 4 NEW programs scheduled this year! Dan presented 3 
programs scheduled for TIS.
Fall Festival scheduled for October 17. New chairs for this event needed.
School Pictures scheduled for 10/7 at TIS and 10/16 at OPS.
Other Committees to report as event dates near.

May 7, 2008; 7:00pm at Overlook Library

Present:  Jeanine Turenchalk, Barb Adams, Heidi Reale, Marylou Hyland, Trudy 
Spinelli, Sharon Baginski, Mary Sorrentino, Sandy Frinton, Stacy Alben, 
Leslie Battistoni, Brady Fister, Dan Shorenstein, Karen Kominski, Kelly 
Lappan, Barbara Donegan.

PTA President Jeanine Turenchalk called meeting at 7:07pm and welcomed and 
thanked everyone for coming.

REMARKS FROM PRINCIPALS
Dr. Fister:  BLT is active in the International Showcase. June 3rd, 7pm.  
Evening will consist of foods, dance, slideshow.   Local businesses are 
being solicited for snacks and refreshments for this event.   Dr. Fister 
requested that PTA support this event with a $100 contribution. Motion made 
by Mary Sorrentino to support this request. MaryLou Hyland seconded. Motion 
carried.
Mr. Shornstein:  Offered remarks on Staff Appreciation luncheon.   Passed 
along compliments from staff.  Thanked Karen Kominski, 5th grade teacher at 
TIS for coming to meeting.  Followed up on success on Livia Vanavar’s Dance 
residency.  Likely to repeat next year.  Sharon Baginski working with staff 
at TIS on Healthy Living.  Starting with “snack” choices, but Dan met with 
cafeteria staff on other issues such as Styrofoam trays, too much ice cream, 
etc.   Looking at possibilities of paving walking/running track.   Karen 
Kominski remarked that healthy snack choices is focused more on daily snacks 
verses the occasional birthday cupcake.

Jeanine passed around correspondence folder of upcoming PTA events.

REPORTS FROM EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Treasurer: Leslie Battistoni distributed monthly P/L report.  April showed a 
loss of almost $13,000 (from payment to Scholastic for book fairs).  Year-to-
date shows a profit of $14,600.  
Membership closed.
Secretary: Minutes from last month distributed.  Edits: Marylou Hyland was 
present but not noted.  Otherwise,  Marylou Hyland motioned to accept 
minutes. Seconded by Leslie Battistoni. Motion carried.
Ways & Means: Vendor for Fall Catalog Fundraiser currently being determined. 
Lisa Bologna working on plan to inform parents of ALL fundraising events

OLD BUSINESS
Comic Book Day by Mr. Shave was big success. Thanks for his efforts.  1st  
and 2nd graders included this year. 
Indoor Golf Fundraiser: Profited approximately $100 during last month’s  
event.

NEW BUSINESS
Nominations of 2008-2009 Executive Board.  Nominations of Jeanine Turenchalk 
as President, Barb Adams as Secretary, Leslie Battistoni as Treasurer, Stacy 
Alben as Membership VP, Lisa Bologna as Ways & Means VP.  Efforts to be made 
to find co-VP’s to facilitate next years transitions.  Motion  made by Heidi 
Reale to accept nominations. Seconded by Sharon Baginski. Motion carried.
Standing Committee Chairs. Jeanine working to fill positions for 2008-2009 
school year.  Please consider volunteering
Barb Adams requested that School Store be made a Standing Committee and line 
item be added as Income to the PTA budget.  Stacy Alben made motion. Mary 
Sorrentino seconded. Motion carried.  Discussion  made to have School Store 
fully stocked just before school opens in the Fall for visiting students.

REPORTS FROM STANDING COMMITTEES
BLT: Talent Show at TIS success. Netted $1200. 
Arts & Science: Marylou Hyland 
Box Tops: Netted $353 to date.
Spring Pictures: Success.
Plant Sale: this Friday.  Left overs to go to Staff Appreciation and 
Beautification efforts.
Field Day: Mr. Stewart coordinating TIS, Tina Cornell coordinating OPS.  
Call for volunteers to come.
Ice Cream Social:  June 6th.  All planning in full swing.  No Starlab, So 
new ideas are welcome.  Looking for volunteers. Alumni (students 6th grade 
and up) welcome.
Staff Appreciation: TIS currently happening. Going well. OPS next week.  
Volunteers needed at OPS.
5th Grade Picnic: Jen Caso and Tina Cornell coordinating planning efforts.  


ANNOUNCEMENTS
No official June meeting but Jeanine announced that Volunteer Appreciation 
Day to be announced! 
ACSD Budget vote on May 20, 2008

Jeanine introduced Barbara Donegan, from Arlington’s Central Office to 
present on ACSD’s 2008-2009 budget which will be voted on Tuesday, May  20.  


After the presentation, discussion was made as to whether or not this PTA 
unit should “support” this budget proposal.  If yes, as an organization, we 
can advise parents to vote “yes” on May 20th.   Motion was made to support 
the budget, seconded and motion carried.  The Overlook-Titusville PTA 
supports the current ACSD budget proposal and encourages parents to vote in 
favor of the proposal.
