Overlook Primary School has support programs in reading/writing
for students in both first and second grade. Mrs. Haverkamp, Overlook's
Language Arts Specialist and Ms. Blazek, Overlook's Academic Intervention
Specialist run these programs. Mrs. Vincitore and Mrs. Hoag are teaching
assistants who also work in these programs.
First grade students who may need an extra boost with the beginning stages
of reading and writing may qualify for the Early Intervention Program. In
this program students receive individual/small group literacy instruction for
thirty minutes a day. Second grade students who need to improve their
reading/writing skills may attend the Language Arts Support Program. These
students are usually recommended for the program by their previous year's
teacher or their present teacher. Mrs. Haverkamp or Ms. Blazek complete an
assessment to determine the student's needs and then design a
program to meet these needs. Second grade students typically attend the
support program for thirty minutes a day in a small group setting.
