Dear Parents:
If you now have, or soon will have, a teenage driver in your home, this
announcement is sure to be of interest.
Every year, we hear of at least one horrific accident that takes the lives of
teens and other young drivers because someone chose to drink and drive. We
know that most of the alcohol-related fatalities occur between the ages of
16 – 21. Arlington High School and the Council of Addiction Prevention and
Education (CAPE) of Dutchess County have joined together in an effort to
prevent these tragedies that needlessly take the lives of our children.
Arlington High School and the Council will host our first year of a special
program for students and their families. The program, “Teen Driving – a
Family Affair,” is mandatory for students who are applying for School Parking
Permits and also for parents, who play such a crucial role in their teen’s
safe driving. Please plan to arrive by 6:15 for registration, so that we can
begin the program promptly at 7:00.
During this program, people who have been victims of drunk driving – whose
lives have been forever changed by someone’s decision to get behind the wheel
of a car after drinking or using some other drug – will share their
compelling stories and reinforce every warning you’ve ever given, every
message issued by teachers, and every public service announcement seen on
television.
You and your teen will leave the program with your own copy of “Our Family’s
Policy on Drinking & Driving”, a Contract to be signed by you and your teen
driver(s), and the comfort of knowing your child and your family are better
prepared to deal with the challenges ahead.
In addition, because so many parents will be there, we will have a
representative from the DA’s office and from an insurance company to talk
about the legal and liability consequences of underage drinking – for you
and your teen.
If you want your child to be able to drive to school, you and your student
driver need to attend this event. If you can not attend the date scheduled,
you may attend at another school. You will find the alternative dates
attached to this letter. We ask that you please not bring any children under
the age of 12 years old with you since the material presented is not
appropriate for them.
Sincerely,
Tom Brooks, Principal

R U E? (ARE YOU READY?) [The "E" should be red.]
Students have been tantalized by a poster campaign throughout school for the
last 2 or 3 weeks. The teasers were posted to create curiosity about an
assembly program that was resheduled for April 9th called "RACHEL'S
CHALLENGE."
What is Rachel's Challenge?
Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April
20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of
her six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing
school programs in America.
Powerful video/audio footage of Rachel's life and the Columbine tragedy holds
students spell-bound during a one hour school presentation that motivates
them to positive change in the way they treat others.
This is followed by an interactive 45-minute training session involving both
adult and student leaders that shows how to sustain the momentum created by
the assembly. The assembly creates the “want to” or desire for positive
change. The training session teaches the “how to” and ensures that the
positive impact will continue.
That evening the Rachel’s Challenge speaker conducts a powerful session with
parents and community leaders. This session is similar to the assembly
program and ends with a specific challenge to parents and community leaders,
showing them how they can reinforce the decisions their youth are making.
Entertainers, politicians, sports celebrities, educators, and even two
Presidents of the United States have been impacted by Rachel’s Challenge.
However, students are the target audience and they have proven that they will
respond with positive words, attitudes, and actions.
Your school will never be the same after being exposed to Rachel’s Challenge!
On September 24th the class of 2012 and the class of 2010 will experience the
assembly in two separate assemblies. A third assembly will be presented on
the evening of September 24th from 7:30 to 8:30 in cafe C & D at Arlington
High
School and it is open to parents and community members. The other classes
will experience the assembly next fall. If you have any questions, please
contact Mr. Wood at ext. 1343 or Mr. Babb at ext. 1486 or Ms. Evans at ext.
1332.
