Facts and Concerns
Our Discipline Plan gives every student the opportunity to manage his or her own behavior in order to successfully meet the challenges of first grade. To encourage students to follow the classroom rules, I reinforce appropriate behavior with praise, stickers, positive notes or calls home, special privileges, and special treats. If a student chooses to break a rule, these are the consequences: 1st time= Warning. 2nd time= 5 min. off of recess. 3rd time= 10 min. off of recess and student writes note home to parents about rule broken. 4th time= 15 min. off of recess and call or note home to parents which needs to be signed and sent back to the teacher. *The students are aware of these consequences and know their responsibility in the classroom. The rules are always posted in the room and you may review the rules with your children by clicking on the "Class Rules" page. What if I have to change my child's usual departure from school? A note is necessary if usual departure changes (parent pick up/riding a different bus/getting off at another bus stop). If your child is attending any after school programs, a note is also necessary. If you forgot a note, please call and notify the office prior to 2:00. It is also very helpful if you let your child know of these changes. Do the parents have to send in any money? In order to pay for the cost of the various class gatherings for the school year, I am asking that each child brings in $7.00 (one dollar per party). Please send in the $7.00 in a labeled envelope before October 1st. We usually have a craft, a game, and snacks for the children to enjoy. Any money left over in June will go toward purchasing food and other items for our END OF THE YEAR class picnic. Do you always go outside for recess? Unless it is raining or snowing, we usually go outside for recess everyday. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather each day. If boots are worn to school, please send in other shoes to change into during the day. Everyday, I allow the children to have a “working snack.” This is where they can finish up their morning work or continue with other work while enjoying a light healthy snack. Your child may also bring in a labeled water bottle for his/her desk. Placing the bottle in a sock greatly reduces sweating on the desk and papers. When is lunch? It's my child's birthday and I have treats. Our lunch time is 11:30-12:00. Your child has the option of bringing or buying lunch. Information about lunch tickets, prices, and the daily menu are all found on the September lunch menu. PLEASE SEND IN ALL MONEY/CHECKS IN A LABELED ENVELOPE, BAGGIE, OR WALLET. Birthdays: If you wish to send in cupcakes/snacks to celebrate your child’s birthday, please let me know in advance. Birthday celebrations take place during lunch only (not in the classroom). Please make sure the treats are in the office no later than 11:00, unless you send them in with your child in the morning. NO DRINKS ARE NECESSARY. Homework will be sent home on the last school day of the week (usually Friday) and it is due back the next to last school day of the following week (usually Thursday). Sometimes the children will bring home an easy-to-read book. Since most of the children are at the emergent level in reading, you will need to read the books several times. After several readings, your child should be joining in to read. I suggest you read a page and then invite your child to reread (not memorize) the page to you. They are not expected to learn all of the words. Please have your child complete all pf the papers in the HOMEWORK folder and a guardian must sign the top paper. Return all papers in the HOMEWORK folder on the due date. Each week your child’s wordbook will come home in the folder. Please check to see which words need to be practices. You can make flash cards to use. The children need to be able to recognize the words-not spell them. I will use this book to let you know of areas that need more practice. Please feel free to write me a note about the work right in this book. Feel free to also go ahead on the word list. How do I order scholastic books online?
