Medication Policies

MEDICATION   IN   THE   SCHOOL

If it becomes necessary for your child to have any medication (over the counter or prescription) in school, please contact the health office .

~Regulations concerning medication in school:

*Please Note: ALL of thefollowing regulations must be met before ANY medication including all over the counter (ex: Tylenol, cough drops, topical cerams, benadryl, or prescription medication) can be given.

1. The Nurse must have a written order signed by the doctorgiving the following information:

a. Name of medication

b. Reason for giving medication

c. Dosage

d. Time medication is to be given

e. Number of days medication is to be given

2. The medication must have a professional label (either drug store or drug company, if propietary).

3. An ADULT MUST bring it to the Health Office. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS A CHILD TO BRING MEDICINE TO SCHOOL.

* New Prescriptions are required at the beginning of each school year in September

~Regarding Cough Drops:

Cough drops are considered medication; therefore, a physician's order is needed stating that the student is allowed to have cough drops in school. As with all medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, thehealth office must have a written order signed by the doctor giving the following information:

a. name of medication

b. Reason for giving

c. Dosage

d. Time

e. Number of days

The medication must have a professional label, and it must be brought to the health officeby an adult. Under no circumstances is a child to bring medication to school. The parent or guardian must sign a permission form for the nurse to administer the medication as directed by the physician. Please follow these New York State Education Law regulations if your child needs medication in school.
