Fall 2009 - First Grade
This fall first grade students will be learning about the artist, Pablo
Picasso. They will see many examples of his work and learn about his use of
line, shape and color. They will learn about his many different styles and
his use of a variety of materials. The first graders will create a guitar
and shape collage inspired by Picasso and the art movement Cubism.
Winter 2009/2010 - First Grade
During the winter first grade students will learn about cave art and make
their own drawings of animals that might be found on a cave wall. The
drawing will be used to create a glue line rubbing that has the texture of
cave art. They will also make a clay snowman and a winter wonderland
landscape painting.
Fall 2009- Second Grade
Second grade students will be exploring natural and man made textures
through a variety of rubbings. They will learn the french word frottage
that refers to a rubbing. After completing a group of different rubbing they
will see the rubbing and collages of Max Ernst. Inspired by his work,
students will use their own rubbing in combination with other papers to
create a landscape collage.
Winter 2009/2010- Second Grade
Second Grade students will create a paper weaving using primary and secondary
colors. They will study the artist Edgar Degas in art and Ballet music in
their music class. With their knowledge they will use oil pastels to draw a
picture using dance and music images. Another arist, Claude Monet and his
paintings of landsacpes, gardens and ponds will inspire their creation of
pond drawings and a clay water lily project.
Fall 2009- Third Grade
The third grade students will be learning about the color
wheel. They will be mixing the primary color paints yellow, red and blue
to make the secondary colors green,orange and purple. They will use the
secondary colors to make a jack-o-lantern painting.
Winter2009/2010 - Third Grade
Third grade students will study the artist Henri Matisse and his use of
bright colors, patterns and shapes. They will make a collage of a stained
glass window design. The project will include the use of geometric and
oragnic shapes, symmetrical and asymmetrical designs, balance and color.
The will continue to look at shape and patterns with Native American
designs. They will create prints and watercolors from the designs and
patterns they draw.
Fall 2009 - Fourth Grade
Fourth graders will be learning about the Hudson River School Artists. We
will be using the lap top computers in art class to do research and see
examples close up of the artists, Thomas Cole, Frederic Church and Thomas
Doughty, Albert Bierstadt. The students will work on a landscape
project using aerial perspective, overlapping, scale and detail to create
distance. We will also review the use of foreground, middleground and
background in a landscape.
Winter 2009/2010 - Fourth Grade
Fourth grade students will view and discuss the work of the artist Marc
Chagall. They will learn that his work includes story telling, powerful
compositions, mood and feelings as well as strong color and shape. They will
create a composition based on a favorite story book from their own childhood.
The students will paint their compositions with watercolors.
Fall 2009and Winter 2009/2010- Fifth Grade
The fifth grade art classes will be looking at proportion as it relates to
portraits and facial features. They will be working on a self portrait
using colored pencils and blending techniques. They will continuu with
proportion and movement in their figures in Motion project. The students
will continue to look at proportion and facial features as they start to
design their fifth grade metal masks.
