WHAT WE LEARNED IN ROOM 5 THIS WEEK! Week of: November 23, 2009
We had a very quick week with just 2 days. We had our Thanksgiving Festival
on Tuesday. I want to thank Mrs. Graff, Mrs. Jermyn, Mrs. Ricci, and Mrs.
Yannarelli for planning a great party...and to Mr. Alfred for an incredible
cheesecake! In the GO GREEN puzzle, the magic number remains at 3 pieces left
to earn for a class reward. Here is the rest of the week in review...
Reading: We reviewed all short vowel sounds (a,e,i,o,u). We also reviewed
all of our sight words...up to this point. After the break, we will learn a
new set of sight words. Due to the short week we did not read a new story as
part of our shared reading. We will review the story "Big Brown Bear" next
week and begin a new story. We reviewed the suffixes /-ed/(past)
and /-ing/(present) and how we use them at the end of certain words (ex:
jumped/jumping) and contractions (ex: we'll=we will). The class read the poem
of the week called "Thanksgiving Chant". We recognized the rhyming words and
plural /s/ words in the poem. Then the class added it to their Poetry
Folders. We did not work on new centers...but continued guided reading
groups. The center work from last week was sent home. Please review the work
with your children. It is what they are working on independently while I am
working with reading groups.
Writing: We practiced writing in our journals this week. Topics related to
over the weekend, and On Thanksgiving. Mrs. Neevel came and did a lesson
using a Pilgrim/Feast picture. The class made a circle map using the picture
and listed all of the naming words (nouns) (ex: hats, table, corn...). Then
the class wrote 2 sentences using the nouns in the picture, and then they
underlined the nouns which they used. The class is continuing to be
encouraged to use their kid spelling and Word Wall words to complete their
sentences and using proper grammar (capitals, periods, correct spacing
between words).
Math: We continued to review our addition skills with sums up to 10. We will
begin topic 6 when we return from Thanksgiving break..
Social Studies: We read varios books about Thanksgiving and reviewed
families. We also read the Weekly Reader called "We Think About Pilgrim
Children". We read and discussed interesting facts about how Pilgrim children
lived long ago and compared it to how children live today.
Science: Our next unit in science will begin soon.
Our Star Helpers this week were Nicole and Arshdeep. I want to thank them
both for making a wonderful effort with all of our classroom jobs this week!
The last Report Card Conferences Day will be Monday, Nov. 30 if I have not
met with you yet. This will be another half day (11:30AM Dismissal).
Please continue to practice covering coughs and sneezes properly and frequent
handwashing. We want to avoid the spread of germs the best that we can and
keep everybody HEALTHY. On a final note..."HOW 'BOUT THEM COWBOYS!"...It
wasn't a pretty win...but it was a win and I'll take it! The Boys play the
Raiders on Thursday (YES! Thanksgiving)...so as always...be sure to root for
the boys while eating some turkey-(GO COWBOYS!!!!).
I also would like to wish the families of Room 5 a happy, healthy and
restful Thanksgiving. Enjoy the time together with your family and friends. I
will see everyone on Monday, Nov. 30th.
On Monday it will be Day 4 in our 6 day cycle. We have Music.
