WHAT WE LEARNED IN ROOM 5 THIS WEEK! Week of: Decemberer 21, 2009

HOORAY! Our Holiday Break has arrived. It was a short week, but was filled
with a lot of activities. We had our Holiday Gala and our Winter Festival on
Monday. We had some caroling visitors from John Jay on Tuesday to sing
classic Christmas carols to us...they were really good! On Wednesday, we
watched the movie "The Polar Express" and had popcorn and also earned the
last piece to our "GO GREEN" puzzle (the class has earned a special reward
for teamwork). We will have it after the break. Excellent job boys and girls!
Here is the rest of the week in review...
Reading: We continued to review all short vowel sounds (a,e,i,o,u). We
reviewed all sight words up to this point. We will begin new sight words
after the break. The class also practiced consonant blends with /l/ and /r/
(sled, grab...), and digraphs (sh, wh, ch, th). Due to the short school week
we did not read a new story or poem. We will also work on new centers our
first week back. REMINDER: The center work completed by your children is what
they work on independently while I am working with reading groups. Please
review the work when it is sent home.
Writing: We practiced writing in our journals this week. Topics related to
Over the weekend, and a reader's response to the story "Hurry Santa!". Mrs.
Neevel came in and helped us complete our "special moment" book. We used the
sequence words (First, Next, Then, Last)in our writing. We also completed a
cover and gave our book a title. As students finished, they were able to
share their book and read it with a partner. REMEMBER: When we write, the
class is continuing to be encouraged to use their kid spelling and Word Wall
words to complete their sentences and using proper grammar (capitals,
periods, correct spacing between words). We have been writing 3 or more
sentences with class assignments.
Math: We continued to review our addition skills with sums up to 10, 11, 12.
We also included doubles with sums up to 18 (ex: 7+7=14...8+8=16 etc.). We
completed topic 16 and practiced using doubles and doubles plus 1
(ex:6+6=12...6+7=13). The class was also assessed on their knowledge of facts
with sums up to 10. We will begin our next topic after the break (Topic 11).
Social Studies: We continued to learn about holidays this week. The class
completed their Holiday Gala this week and did various activities on 4
holidays...Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year's. We also watched a
video about the Chinese New Year.
Science: Our next unit in science will begin after the holiday break.
Our Star Helpers this week were Vjosa and Jonathan. I want to thank them
both for making a wonderful effort with all of our classroom jobs this week!
Please continue to practice covering coughs and sneezes properly and
frequent handwashing. We want to avoid the spread of germs the best that we
can and keep everybody HEALTHY.
I want to take this time to thank all the families in room 5 for the great
goodies, gifts and cards that were sent in this past week. I really
appreciate your thoughfulness (it means so much to me) and I wish you all the
best for a safe, happy and healthy holiday season. Enjoy the time off with
your family and friends.
On a final note...OH! YEH- "HOW 'BOUT THEM COWBOYS!" beating the UNdefeated
Saints who suffered their first loss of the season. Mr. D was very happy! The
next game is against the Redskins on Sunday night...so as always...be sure to
root for the boys!-(GO COWBOYS!!!!).
On Monday (Jan. 4) it will be Day 3 in our 6 day cycle. We P.E.
