WHAT WE LEARNED IN ROOM 5 THIS WEEK! Week of: November 2, 2009

We began a new month. It was a short week due to Superintendent's Conference
Day on Tuesday (No School). We completed our class graph for the month of
November. It was related to my favorite Thanksgiving food. The choices were
pumpkin pie, turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing, and cranberry sauce.
Room 5's favorite was...TURKEY! I am pleased to announce that the class
earned 2 puzzle pieces this week in their GO GREEN puzzle. The magic number
is now 5! Here is the rest of the week in review...
Reading: We reviewed all letter sounds and the short /i/ sound. We completed
various pages in our short /i/ word family books. We completed the -it, -in,
-ip and -id word families (ex: hit, pin, lid, tip). We will begin the
short /o/and /u/ book next week. We also reviewed our sight words.../walk/-
/talk/-/saw/-/with/and /went/. We read the story "I Went Walking" and pointed
out the color words with the naming words (ex: yellow dog, red cow, black
cat...). We read this book as part of our shared reading. We also comepleted
a bridge map for the numbers that we noticed in the story (yellow is to dog
as red is to cow...). We also sequenced the order in which the animals were
shown in the story. The class read the poem of the week called "Veteran's
Day". We recognized the rhyming words and sight words. Then the class added
it to their Poetry Folders. We reviewed contractions this week (ex: do
not=don't/ is not=isn't). We continued new centers and guided reading
groups. The center work that your child completes on their own will be sent
home at the end of each week or at the beginning of the following week.
Please review the work with your children. It is what they are working on
independently while I am working with reading groups.
Writing: We practiced writing in our journals this week. Topics related to
over the weekend, on my day off (Tuesday) and I am thankful for___because___.
Mrs. Neevel read the story "The Family Book" and we dicussed who is in our
family, things we do with our family and what makes our family special. The
class completed a tree map about 3 family members that they want to write
about. This will eventually be made in a family book. The class is continuing
to be encouraged to use their kid spelling and Word Wall words to complete
their sentences and using proper grammar (capitals, periods, correct spacing
between words).
Math: We completed various lessons on writing addition sentences and joining
parts. We practiced this concept using pictures and counters. The class also
reviewed adding in any order with 2 numbers will give you the same sum
(ex: 3+2=5 2+3=5). We will work more with addition next week.
Social Studies: We began our unit on families. We also read the Weekly
Reader called "Hello, Baby Bird!". We read and discussed interesting facts
about the bald eagle and what an important symbol it is to our country.
Science: Our next unit in science will begin soon.
Our Star Helpers this week were Heather and Brenden. I want to thank them
both for making a wonderful effort with all of our classroom jobs this week!
Report Card Conferences are approaching quickly. I will be sending home
reminders with your day and time that you will be meeting with me to discuss
your child's progress. On a final note...HOW 'BOUT THEM COWBOYS!...again. The
Cowboys had a nice win last Sunday against the Seahawks. They will travel to
Philadelphia Sunday night to play the Eagles. So as always...be sure to root
for the boys (GO COWBOYS!!!!). CONGRATULATIONS! to the New York Yankees for
winning the World Series this week (AWESOME SEASON!)
On Monday it will be Day 5 in our 6 day cycle. We have Art.
