Course Description: This class seeks to introduce students to a basic
appreciation of literature through an exploration of various literary forms
(plays, poems, novels, short stories). By integrating vocabulary culled from
the assigned reading, studies of different literary devices, and a detailed
look at the background and worldview of each author discussed, a greater
understanding of literature and the English language will be developed.
Grammar and Composition, as well as learning to do proper research, are also
integral parts of this development.
Course Requirements:
1. Homework: Students will be assigned nightly reading assignments and
written homework (either an short essay or short questions) will be assigned
usually twice a week. There will also be homework based on grammar, spelling
and writing style. Late homework will be accepted only with a valid excuse.
2. Class participation: Students are expected to behave and listen
accordingly. No poor behavior will be tolerated. Consistent class
participation (i.e. answering questions, etc.) is expected.
3. Quizzes: Students will have a weekly quiz on materials covered in class
and on the readings.
4. Exams: There will be at least two exams per quarter, consisting primarily
of multiple choice, short questions and essays.
5. Break-up of Student’s Report Card Grade: 80% Exams, papers, quizzes; 20%
homework and class participation.
6. Course outline: (Student text: Elements of Literature) – throughout the
year, other texts may be substituted or added.
