Theology III: Foundations of Christian Morality

Instructor: Rev. John P. Cush, STL

Text: The Essential Moral Handbook: A Guide for Catholics by O'Neill
and Black. Liguori Press. 2006

Course Description: This class intends to introduce students to the
foundations of Catholic Morality as found in Scripture, Tradition and
Magisterium. Following an outline provided by the Ten Commandments
and The Catechism of the Catholic Church, the student will hopefully
be able to integrate the teachings and laws of the Church into his
own lived experience of faith. PLEASE NOTE: This year, the class will
conclude material begun in Theology II: Scripture by studying in the
first quarter the Gospel of John, Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles
of Paul, the Catholic Epistles and the Book of Revelation.

Grade Breakdown: 20% Homework and Participation; 80% Quizzes, Exams
and Papers.

Required Materials: Students are to have a marble notebook.

Homework: All homework will be posted for the quarter on the
Instructor’s website. All homework comes from the assigned textbook.
It is the responsibility of the student to keep up with the homework.

Duval Essay: In the third quarter, the student will participate in
the Annual Duval Essay. The grade for the student’s Duval Essay will
be counted as an exam grade for that quarter.

Papers: There will be at least one (1) three (3) to four (4) page
essay assigned each semester that will count as an exam grade. Each
essay must be typed, double-spaced, 3-4 pages in length. Essays will
be graded on content, grammar, spelling, syntax and style. Essays
must be handed in on the assigned due date. Failure to do so will
result in a loss of 2 points each school day. No e-mailed homework
will be accepted. I must have a print copy of your essay.

Exams: Each quarter will have at least two exams. Material will be
based on both the text’s assigned readings as well as class notes.

Quizzes: There will be a quiz each week that an exam is not
administered. All the quizzes of a quarter will be averaged together
to form one test grade.
