After reviewing the parts of newspapers in the library,
the class will decide on a name for the paper. Then you will break into
groups and choose an assignment for the colonial paper. Sections include:
News stories: Politics, war news, Continental Congress, etc.
Lifestyle: recipes, school news, fashion, society stories, crafts
Sports
Classifieds: help wanted, items for sale
Editorial: opinion letters about King George or other topical issues
Cartoons
Advertising
Group topics must be approved by the librarian before you begin.
Each group member must contribute to the effort, either in research, drawing,
layout or typing. Use the on-line and print resources provided in the
Process section to gather information. Time will be provided during library
classes.
After research is complete, your story, ad or cartoon must be typed in the
computer lab or hand drawn if it is a cartoon. Be sure to include pictures
in your news stories, there are many available in the on-line sources.
Articles must then be laid out on the final newspaper page to create a
complete paper.
