What is Montessori?

Montessori is a philosophy and method of education which
emphasizes the potential of the young child and which develops
this potential by using special teaching materials. Montessori
materials help the child to understand what s/he learns by
associating abstract concepts with concrete sensorial experiences.

The young child internalizes concepts through movement,
repetition, the use of their senses and the manipulation of
concrete objects. Montessori provides a rich environment of well-
structured tasks in a broad and far reaching curriculum.

The children are permitted freedom of choice within a stimulating
environment with clearly defined limits. Children work
individually as well as in small and large groups. They become
absorbed by their chosen tasks and experience a deep, inner
satisfaction in doing so.

The environment, based on self-directed, non-competitive
activities, helps children develop self-esteem and the confidence
to face challenges and change with optimism.

The true value of Montessori education lies in the self-
discipline, self-mastery, and true love of learning that the
children achieve.

What makes Montessori unique?

The premise of Montessori education is that young children learn
best in a homelike setting filled with developmentally
appropriate materials that provide experiences contributing to
the growth of self-motivated, independent learners.

Why five days a week?

To benefit fully from the Montessori approach, daily
reinforcement is suggested. Children respond positively to the
consistency of a five day a week program. Separation anxiety is
lessened and social development is strengthened by the sense of
community that develops from day to day contact in the classroom
environment.

What should my child bring to school each day?

Your child should bring a backpack to school each day. This will
help transport important papers, folders, hats and mittens, etc.
to and from school. Please be sure to keep extra special items
such as stuffed animals, make-up, candy, toys, etc. at home. We
feel that bringing these items to school can be distracting for
your child and others. Thank you for your understanding.

Will my child have "Show and Tell"?

We will have Share Day each Friday, beginning in October. Each

bring in something special from home that begins with that sound.
