Welcome to 6th grade ELA! Throughout the year we will do a variety of
activities that will prepare us for the NYS ELA in April.
With the new core curriculum standards that have been implemented, we will be
doing a variety of different things this year.
We have been working on Folklores: A Blast from the Past which looks at a
variety of myths and legends from ancient civilizations. We have also been
reading the novel The Lightning Thief and comparing it with myths and legends
from Ancient Greece.
Our next unit is entitled I Don't Want to Grow up in which the students will
be reading the book Peter and the Starcatchers which is the prequel to Peter
Pan and doing a variety of assignments comparing those two stories and how
prequels are written. Students will also be looking into the meaning
of "growing up" and what it means to them and what it means to Peter. We
will also look at the authors of both books and comparing how they came to
write each of the books.
Their next book report assignment (under documents and rubrics) is due on
February 13, 2012.
Look for more in the coming months as we prepare for the ELA. Also, ask your
child about R.A.P. and how it is being used!
