Kids might say �I�ve heard of TV networks,� or �The internet has something to do with networks.�) * Use prior knowledge to apply to the context of the unknown word. * Identify the meanings of a prefix or suffix. * Identify a root word and its meaning. * Look at other words that you know in the word that you do not know. Use all the words around the word, the context, as clues to the meaning. * For two word terms, pull the words apart and define each separately. Put those words back together in their context and decide on the meaning � For example, �cash crop�. Each word is defined separately and then applied to the context and understanding of colonial trade. Cash = money, Crop = something grown.
