The mission statement of each of the guidance counselors or school counselors
working within the WCSD is to foster the individual, personal, and academic
growth of each of the young people attending their learning institutions.
While doing well academically is of the utmost importance, it is also
important that our students grow to be responsible, caring, and educated
citizens of society. School counselors will help children develop socially
and emotionally, and to mature in their relationships with others.
In the Wappingers School District, Counselors will serve as a resource for
students, parents, and teacher alike, helping to address some of the everyday
challenges facing Wappingers students. They will facilitate the communication
of school staff to encourage the understanding of children's individual
needs.
In some cases, students experience difficulties adapting to the school
environment. Some students may experience social issues, while others may
experience academic struggles. Each of the school's support professionals is
committed to helping each child perform to the best of their academic ability
and to encourage a positive school experience.
In general, School Counselors will serve to help students develop a better
understanding and acceptance of themselves. They will help students cope with
family changes. They will encourage students to develop decision-making and
problem solving skills.
