How can I tell if a book is too hard for my child to read?

Use the FIVE FINGER RULE. Have your child open the book and begin reading.
Each time your child comes across a word they do not know, have them raise
one finger. If by the end of the page they have more than 5 fingers up, it
is too difficult. If they have five or less, it's a "just right" book to
read.

If they read it quickly and without any errors, it may be too easy. You can
try to encourage them to try a different book, BUT if they are interested in
it, let them reaad it. The more they read, the better readers they will
become!

How can I help my child pick out a book to read?

Go with your child to the library, book store, or wherever. Look for books
with subjects that might interest them. Let your child explore the book by
looking at the front cover, paging through, and checking out the back
cover to read the "blurb" about the story.

What types of books should they read?

Any kind!!! Don't limit your child to just books though. There are many
magazines for kids to explore. Read the newspaper with your child, read the
comics, go online to many exciting websites that are just for kids. There's
lots to read, all you need to do is find it.

What else can I do to help my child read and write better?

Be a role model for them. Let them see you read. You are their first and
most powerful teacher.
