1-1-1 word
any word that has
1 syllable
1 vowel
ends in only 1 consonant
cup, spot, bud
suffixes
letters added to the end of the "baseword" to "alter" the meaning
ing, ed, es, s, y, able, ment, less....
baseword
- the part of the word that would make sense, even if the suffix were removed
sheep+ish=sheepish (sheep is the baseword)
hop + ing = hopping (hop is the baseword)
1-1-1 doubling rule
- if you add a vowel suffix to any 1-1-1 word, you double the last consonant as in
hopping
cupped
