Spelling Rules


 
unit 2
  • 1-1-1 word any word that has
    •   1 syllable
    •    1 vowel
    •    ends in only 1 consonant
      • cup, spot, bud
  • suffixes 
    • letters added to the end of the "baseword" to "alter" the meaning
    • ing, ed, es, s, y, able, ment, less....
  • baseword - the part of the word that would make sense, even if the suffix were removed
    •  sheep+ish=sheepish (sheep is the baseword)
    • hop + ing = hopping (hop is the baseword)
  • 1-1-1 doubling rule -  if you add a vowel suffix to any 1-1-1 word, you double the last consonant as in
    •    hopping
    •    cupped
