The Library and Information Skills program operates on the premise that
students in today’s society must become effective consumers of ideas and
information. The Library and Information Skills curriculum at the Fredonia
Central School functions as a support mechanism to the work of the classroom
curriculum and the learning process as a whole. The curriculum consists of
clearly defined locational, investigating, reporting, assessing, and reading
guidance skills.
Library and Information Skills are needed to prepare students to access,
process, apply, andcommunicate information. As we move toward an ever
changing global society, we are continuously overwhelmed with complex ideas,
recent information, and inno vative technology. This change in society
demands that students become skilled in understanding, reading, gathering,
filtering, and using information. Integrated with other curricular areas,
Library and Information Skills become the essential tools that equip
students to interact with all forms of media for appropriate purposes.
Authentic practice of Library and Information Skills will enable students to
become lifelong learners and informed decision makers as well as positive
contributors to society.
Learning Standards and Benchmarks for each curricular area are listed in the
Core Curriculum. These are the reference points from which to identify how
to integrate and align Library and Information Skills with the curriculum.
Benchmarks for the Library and Information Skills Program follows in this
section. These benchmarks help assure that students have a common set of
basic skills to accomplish class assignments and related tasks under the
guidance of qualified staff. They may be adapted and expanded to fit the
needs of individual students and projects.
Key skill areas include:
§ Information and Resources: Identification and Location
§ Information and Resources: Selection, Usage, and Evaluation
§ Literature: Appreciation and Evaluation
§ Library Citizenship and Responsibilities
