This week I have reviewed, and given guided practice, in the area of reading nonfiction. The children read a TFK and determined the most important details in the article. We then took notes together on the board, organizing the information together. Using those notes the children wrote a summarizing paragraph. They forgot some of their good writing skills, but more practice will be forthcoming in the next weeks. After one more practice with another TFK, we're going to start a little unit on nutrition.
You might be wondering why nutrition in ELA class. According to the Core Curriculum Standards which NYS has adopted, fifth graders need to read more rigorous nonfiction material. This seemed like a pertinent topic on which I can gather a good deal of written materials for them to use. They also have to learn how to get information from other sources, so I will be showing a few short videos and helping them take notes while they watch. After gathering information from a variety of sources, we will put our information together, organize it and there will be a written outcome. Watch your child's ELA composition book for progress.
We have started with our day in the computer lab reading picture biography books for AR tests. My goals include the obvious one of learning about famous people, but also for the children to learn the genre and to learn how to answer questions about what they're reading in the non-fiction category. I don't expect them to remember every detail from the books, rather to learn how to look for key words in the questions that can make looking back into the story an easier process. Our goal is to get 100% on each test since the books are there for look-backs. Students who have trouble spend time with me learning how to choose key words from the question, to scan the text to find the correct page and then reread for specific information, per expectations from the core curriculum. They've done very well and are proud of their successes!
The children continue to read for at least 40 minutes each evening in their AR books. I'm not reading a novel to the class right now. Instead, we've again reviewed text features for nonfiction reading. I showed them how much information they can glean from a text just from reading headings, captions, graphs, etc. We will continue with this nonfiction concentration for quite a while in order to be in compliance with the Core Curriculum expectations. Currently that consists of reading and studying weekly TFKs as well as the materials they'll be studying in preparation for

If your child tells you that he/she doesn't need to read at home because he/she had Reading class that day, they are mistaken. They need to build the habit of daily home reading, even on weekends. Thanks for your support. Daily reading is the one best thing a child can do to ensure success all the way through school!
