As I look at the calendar and realize how little time we have left together, I start to get anxious about a couple of things.  One, I still have a lot of teaching left to prepare your little ones for second grade.  Two, I don't want to lose this awesome class I have!  And three, I have a lot to do in preparation for some very cool and very fun surprises for the end of the school year!  Any way you look at it, I definitely need more time!!

This week is begins our last unit in our reading series.  Although I will be teaching the skills in this unit, I will not be TESTING the kids on these new skills... no spelling tests, no benchmark test.  Instead, I will be doing a lot of individual assessments and reviewing previous spelling skills with the kids.  Therefore, the spelling homework will look different for the last weeks of school.  More information will be sent home.

On June 11th, our school will participate in Relay for Recess! We will go out to the track throughout the day to walk/run laps to raise money for cancer research.  We are collecting pennies (or spare change) in our classroom in preparation for this special day.  Our class has already filled an entire bucket... we've emptied it and are starting again!!  Yay!  Remember, everyones handful of pennies adds up quickly with a class of 1st graders!  Thank you so much for your support!

Please check the dates to remember section often.  New dates are added often!

This week we are beginning our Inquiry Projects on Insects.  I will begin by modeling with the LADYBUG.  After Memorial Day, the students will begin researching their own insect and developing their own inquiry project.  This is my favorite time of year.  The students really learn how to work independently!!

The first grade team is excited to announce that our end of the year field trip will be on Friday, June 1st. We will be taking our annual trip to MIDWAY!! This is always such a fun trip that builds lots of great memories for the kids. Chaperones are an important part of this trip to make it safe and fun. Please let me know if you would like to attend as a chaperone (I am able to take 2-3 parents on the bus and everyone else is welcome to carpool or drive separately). Also let me know if you NEED to ride the bus or if you are able to drive separately. One last thing... in the past, parents have been able to sign out their kids at the park (many stay longer after the buses leave). I will check to make sure that option is still available.

The Fredonia Elementary will be having a book fair the week of May 14th. A notice was sent home to let you know when our class is invited to go buy books (we are going on Wednesday as a class).

Please remember to send in appropriate outdoor clothing daily! We go outside daily! Please watch the forecast to see if your child will need a jacket or sweatshirt. It is always windy on our school playground!!!

In Math, we are reviewing all skills from Everyday Math. We are really focusing on becoming fluent with our math facts!  Please help out by practicing them at home!  I appreciate all of the help you give!
