What is a referral for special education?
A referral is a written statement asking that the school district to evaluate
your child to determine if he or she needs special education services.
Where do I send this statement?
This written statement should be addressed to the chairperson of your school
district's Committee on special education or your school principal.
Who can make a referral for special education?
The parent. The child's teacher or a professional in the child's school.
Additional people who may make a referral include: doctors, judicial
officiers, or a designated public agency.
What happens after a referral has been made?
The parent or guardian will be asked for written consent to evaluate the
child.
What is an evaluation include?
An evaluation includes various assessment tools and strategies. These will
determine what the child's learning difficulties may be.
