Grade 5Social Studies  The children are learning about colonial life in North America.  They will understand why the Americas attracted Europeans, why they brought enslaved Africans to their colonies, and how Europeans struggled for control of North America and the Caribbean. They will understand how political, religious, and social institutions emerged in the North American colonies.  The children will understand how the values and institutions of European economic life took root in the colonies and how slavery reshaped European and African life in the Americas.   

5th Grade Science Standard: 3  The children are learning about space.  They will understand that day and night are caused by the earth's rotation on its axis.  Know that the Earth is one of several planets that orbit the sun and that  the moon orbits the Earth.  They will understand that the patterns of stars in the sky stay the same, although they appear to move slowly from east to west across the sky nightly and different stars can be seen in different seasons. Understand that planets look like stars, but over time they appear to wander among the constellations.     Know that astronomical objects in space are much larger in size and are separated from one another by vast distances.  Understand that telescopes magnify distant objects in the sky and dramatically increase the number of stars we see.
