Honeoye Central School
Onagadeca Chapter Bylaws
Membership
Membership in the National Honor Society is an honor bestowed upon a
student. A Faculty Council selects members based on outstanding
scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected,
members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these
qualities. Membership is of three types: active, honorary and graduate.
At graduation, active members become graduate members and have no
voice or vote in chapter affairs.
Faculty Council
The Faculty Council shall consist of five voting faculty members
appointed annually by the principal. The chapter advisor shall be a
non-voting sixth member of the Faculty Council.
Selection of Members
Only those students who have attended Honeoye Central School for at
least twenty weeks, the equivalent of one semester, may be considered
for membership. Juniors and seniors with a cumulative grade point
average of 85 or higher are eligible for membership. They receive a
Student Activity Information Form on which they detail their service,
leadership and character. Upon completion of the form, students
submit it to the Faculty Council for review. At the same time, the general
faculty complete evaluation sheets for the students. Student Activity
Information Forms and faculty evaluations are confidential documents.
Upon reviewing information from student applicants and the general
faculty, the Faculty Council votes. Each candidate who receives a
majority vote is selected for membership. The chapter advisor notifies
the students and gives them information regarding induction and
obligations of membership. Students or parents who have concerns
regarding non-selection should meet with the chapter advisor.
Meeting and Activities
The following Committee Chairs have been established:
o Bulletin Board Committee Chairperson
o Website Chairperson
o Newsletter Chairperson
o Leadership Workshop Chairperson
o Service Chairperson
o Communications Officer
Each Chairperson will organize monthly meeting dates and times for
their committees. They will take attendance, run meeting, provide
advisor with monthly notes and update NHS members of progress at
full NHS monthly meetings.
All NHS students need to be on at least one committee and regularly
attend their monthly meetings. Meetings can take place either during
lunch or after school.
The Communications officer will take notes during full NHS monthly
meetings, prepare minutes and distribute to members. He or she will
assist in keeping records of member service requirements, as well as
other administrative tasks as needed.
All members will be expected to participate in the chapter service
project, and complete an individual service project. It is the
responsibility of each member to complete the service activity reflection.
If a member misses more than one full meeting and/or two committee
meetings, or if they do not fulfill service requirements, they will be placed
on probation, which will result in loss of privileges:
o hall pass
o lunch pass
o commencement recognition
Dismissal
Members who fall below the standards which were the basis for their
selection are promptly warned in writing by the chapter advisor and
given a reasonable amount of time to correct the deficiency. In the case
of flagrant violation of school rules or civil laws, a member does not
necessarily have to be warned. The Faculty Council determines when
an individual exceeds a reasonable amount of warnings. In all cases
impending dismissal, a member has the right to a hearing before the
Faculty Council. For purposes of dismissal, a majority vote of the
Faculty Council is required. A member who has been dismissed may
appeal the decision to the Faculty Council under the same rules for
disciplinary appeals. A student who is dismissed or who resigns is
never again eligible for membership in NHS.
