New York State ELA Standard 1-Language for Formation and Understanding 

1A   Students gather and interpret information from children's reference 
books, magazines, textbooks, electronic bulletin boards, audio and media 
presentations, oral interviews, and from such forms as charts, graphs, maps 
and diagrams. 
 
NYS Social Studies Standard 2-World
1C   Students study about different world cultures and civilizations focusing 
on their accomplishments, contributions, values, beliefs, and traditions.  

NYS Social Studies Standard 3- Geography
1A   Students study about how people live, work, and utilize natural 
resources.  
1D   Students identify and compare the physical, human, and cultural 
characteristics of different regions and people.
  
NYS Social Studies Standard 4-Economy
1D   Students study about how the availability and distribution of resources 
is important to a nation's economic growth. 

NYS Social Studies Standard 5-Civics
1C   Students describe the basic purposes of government and the importance of 
civic life.
