Keeping a notebook is mandatory. Your notebook should be a 3-ring binder (1.5"), with a supply of blank lined paper and graph paper. You will need 3 tabbed sections: Classnotes, Problem solutions, and Lab Notes.
1)Record the date each day.
2) All pages should be kept in chronological order.
3) The notes must be complete and diagrams should be included.
4) All worksheets must be completed and included.
5) All informational pages must be included (they should be dated too).
Guidelines for Laboratory Write-ups
The purposes of the physics labs vary. Some labs are mathematical investigations of the relationship of variables within equations. Some labs are done purely to enhance your intuitive understanding of physical principles and laws. The write-ups will vary based on the type of lab that you are doing.
The primary thing to remember in each lab write-up, is that you must demonstrate your understanding of what was done, and why it was done. Labs rarely will be “fill in the blank, after following a recipe.” I want to be sure that you understand what is going on. Many labs will be introduced on the board, with no formal hand-out. You must take notes and ask questions if you are not sure about what to do. The lab may be introduced as a challenge to calculate a particular quantity.
For instance: “Calculate the velocity of the toy car by making the appropriate measurements and using the appropriate equations.” For this you would need to come up with a procedure, a data table and finally sample calculations.
In your write-up, at the top, always write your name, the date the lab was done, and the TITLE of the lab.
Next state the following:
a) the goal or purpose of the lab in one or more complete sentences.
b) The materials used , including any instruments and the quantities that they measure
c) Data tables
d) Sample calculations
Write an essay explaining what the lab is about and what you are accomplishing. The essay should be at least 2 clearly written paragraphs.
Labs are graded as full credit or unacceptable àzero/re-do.
