GABRIELL BRACCHI - PRESIDENT
My Name is Gabriell Bracchi and I would love the opportunity to represent my classmates as their president for this upcoming year. I realize with the office of class president comes great responsibility and challenges. I feel my past experiences, accomplishments, and skills will prove beneficial in the role of president. In the following essay, I intend to explain why I feel I should be considered for this prestigious position.
I think having experience as an officer is crucial for the role of president. As a student at Van Wyck Junior High School, I served both as Class President and Class Vice President. It was an honor to be selected by my peers both years and I felt obligated to make a positive difference in their lives. Although extremely motivated, my first year was challenging. I needed to learn how to communicate effectively with my peers and the administration. Organizing fund raisers were also challenging since I had never done it before. My last year in office was easier. I worked just as hard but accomplished so much more due to the fact I had done it before. If elected, I feel I can really make a difference based on my previous experience and maturity. If elected, I plan to hit the floor running and make a big difference in the lives of the students I represent.
Along with my experience in office, I believe my success academically says a lot for my ability to be president. I have always been passionate about learning. That along with the fact that I am an extremely hard worker has allowed me to maintain an average in the high 90’s over my academic career. I am also proud of the fact that I am a member of the National Junior Honor Society. At Van Wyck, I also won awards for having the highest average in the school for three different subjects.
In order to be president I think you need to have certain skills that cannot be learned. One thing you need to be is a leader. I always look for opportunities to lead. I think I am good at playing that role mainly because I am comfortable in that role. I also think that people sometimes expect me to assume that role. I have been a vocal leader at times and have also lead by example. Knowing the type of leadership needed is important. I also consider myself to be outgoing. I love talking to people and feel that communication skills are an important skill needed for the role of president. I also work hard and can be extremely competitive at times.
Along with learning, I am extremely passionate about sports. My first love is softball which I have been playing since I was five years old. At Van Wyck, I played softball for two years. During those two years our team was undefeated. I also lead the team in several offensive categories my second year. I currently play travel softball for the Dutchess Debs. Over my two years with the Debs, I have been fortunate to lead the team in several offensive categories as well. We play tournaments year round from Rhode Island to Maryland. This year we are playing in Disney World. I also have been a Pop Warner cheerleader since I was five. Over my career, my team has won 9 Conference Championships, 7 State Championships, The Eastern Regional Championship and came in 2nd in the National Championship. That same year I was given the honor of being named an All American Cheerleader by Pop Warner. This is an honor that I shared with less than one percent of all Pop Warner athletes across the country. That year I was also elected team captain by my teammates. That was a year I will never forget. Currently, I am playing field hockey for John Jay High School. I also plan to run track and play softball for John Jay this year.
I hope I have convinced you that I am up for the challenge. I have the right attitude, experience and skills to take on the role of president. I can relate to a diverse group of students and generally care what is on their minds. I love working with people and want to make a difference in their lives. I understand how to get things done by working with the administration. I hope I get the opportunity to represent the school and my classmates. Thank you for your consideration.
AJ Nandi - President
My name is Arjun Nandi. A few adjectives that describe me are: leading, dependable, and responsible. I am a natural born leader. You can ask any one of my past teachers and they will concur. You can always depend on me. All of my friends depend on me, and I do not disappoint them. I am very responsible, otherwise I would have forgotten about this essay.
I have skills that make me a very efficient leader. I am not selfish, which is the most important quality. If you are selfish, then you would be leading the freshman class for the benefit of yourself. I am running because I feel that I can benefit the whole class the most. Another quality would be, I know how to encourage people and get them motivated. If I am ever in a group, I naturally take charge, but not an assertive charge, but productive leading. You can ask all my classmates that have ever been in a group with me, our group is always on task and everyone is participating. It is mostly because I can keep the group working by leading it. Over the summer I took a class on how to lead at Harvard University. It was a one week course and I realized that everything that they had taught, I had already used when I am in a leadership position. That is why I believe I am a natural leader.
Dependability is the other most important aspect of being a president. You have to be able to help and work with many different people, and they depend on you to pull your end of the weight, which is usually a lot because you are the president. You can expect me to pull my end of the weight and I even pull many of my peers’ weight when necessary. You know that I am dependable when three other president candidates came to me for advice on how to run, how to get nominated, and what the presidency will be like. I helped them without hesitation, even though it probably jeopardized my chances of being elected. When someone asks you for advice or help with a project, I never say no.
Responsibility is the characteristic that is necessary after you get elected. You have to be responsible enough to make all the meetings, complete everything that was asked of you, and be on time. I have learned responsibility through my 9 years of school. Obviously when I was little I was not the most responsible, but staying in Harvard by myself with no parental care except a security guard, I had to learn responsibility. I have even traveled internationally without my parents, so managing passports and other travel documents have made me even more responsible. Now I am confident that I am more responsible than necessary to become president.
Intelligence is another category that is often seen as the most important trait for presidents. I disagree. If you know a million facts about history or can solve multivariable calculus but you don’t know how to apply that knowledge into the real world or your school world, it is basically useless as a president. I have the intelligence, but I also posses that higher thinking ability to apply all my knowledge to our world.
Leaders are the ones with strength to motivate and encourage the growth of others. I am a leader. I take initiative, and I am very open. I have responsibility through experience and independence. I have the intelligence, and the ability to apply this knowledge to the real world. I think I am the best candidate for the president of the freshman class 2009.
Andrea Varvara - Vice President
Hi, I’m Andrea Varvara. I am running for Vice President of the freshman class. I have lived in Hopewell Junction my entire life. I have gone to school here and have played sports here. I am very proud of being a John Jay freshman. I believe I will make a great officer because I know how to be part of a team because I have played sports. I know that just one person cannot win a game. It takes hard work and team work to reach the hard goals you make for yourself. I am also someone who listens and tries to help others with their problems. I believe I will listen to my class mates and do my best to make their time at John Jay better. I believe I can do this by serving on the Executive Council of Student Government and by assisting the President in their functions. My goals include encouraging my class mates to be involved in events clubs sports so that they feel a part of the school. I would also like to help them solve any problems they have by speaking with administrators or teachers.
Danielle Morrison - Secretary
Hello,
My name is Danielle Morrison and I am running for the secretary position of the 2009-2010 ninth grade class. I have read and understand the job description and feel that I can more than handle the responsibilities.
My goal as secretary would be to help keep the student government organized. I would do this by taking detailed minutes of each meeting, checking the mail and responding in a timely manner, and keeping my classmates informed.
Qualities that would help me with this job are; I'm an outgoing person who works well with others and I’m also a responsible person who can also work independently to complete a task. I am reliable and trustworthy and this would allow me to help my fellow class officers to achieve their goals for the ninth grade class.

My handwriting is very neat and easy to read. I am great at keeping records of people, times, dates, events, thoughts and ideas. Second, I would like to attend every meeting and help keep the student government up and running smoothly. In life I have set many goals for myself, both academically and athletically.
