Week of October 26th, 2009
This week we will begin our topic on Organic Families. We will be starting
with CARBOHYDRATES. We will be having our test on Wednesday of this week on
the first half of chapter 2 (text pages 35-43) and I will be AFTER SCHOOL
for TEST REVIEW on TUESDAY the 27th. On Thursday and Friday we will be
working on our carbohydrate model lab.
Week of October 12th, 2009
This week we will be starting our discussions on the Chemistry of Living
Things. We will start by reviewing atomic structure, elements, molecules and
compounds. We will discuss chemical bonding (ionic and covalent) and
differentiate between chemical formulas and structural formulas. We will be
focusing on the six most biologically important elements C,H,N,O,P and S. We
will be learning that both C and H are found in organic compounds and
differentiate them from inorganic compounds. On Friday we will have a short
quiz on atomic structure.
Week of October 5th, 2009
This week we will be working on and completing our first NYS Lab Making
Connections. We will be applying what we learned regarding experimental
design and organizing and preparing a final report for Part B of the Making
Connections Lab.
We will be having our first TEST on THURSDAY OCTOBER 8TH. I will be staying
after school on Wednesday the 7th for anyone interested in review for the
test.
Week of Sept. 21st, 2009
This week we will be exploring the characteristics of living organisms and
learn how life can be studied at different levels. We will also be learning
about the parts and function of the compound microscope. We will practice
focusing and using the microscope correctly as we work on our lab focusing on
Daphnia (water fleas) and mosqutios. We will be watching some short videos
on characteristics of living things, how organisms are structured and how to
use a compound microscope.
PLEASE remind your parents / guardians that our OPEN HOUSE is this week on
THURSDAY SEPT. 24 at 7pm and encourage them to come and meet your teachers.
