What is the purpose of art in our schools? The aim of ALL education is to create a well-rounded, well-adjusted, and open
minded learner. Art does not just encompass drawing, painting, and
sculpture. Art addresses history, math, science, ELA, and your children as
wonderful individuals!!!
What are the NYS standards for art education? Standard 1. Creating, performing, and participating in the arts.
A. Experiment and create works in a variety of mediums, based on a
range of individual and collective experiences.
B. Develop own ideas and images through exploration and creation:
themes, symbols, events.
C. Understand and use elements and principles of art in order to
communicate their ideas.
D. Reveal how art mediums and techniques influence their work.
E. identify and use (individual/group experiences) some roles and
means for designing, producing, art works.
Standard 2. Knowing and using art materials and resources.
A. Understand characteristics of various mediums- select appropriate for
their purposes and intents.
B. Develop electronic media skills to express visual ideas.
C. Know cultural institutions and community opportunities for looking
at origional art and visiting artists.
D. Examples of adults who make their living in the arts.
Standard 3. Responding to and analyzing works of art.
A. Explain their reflections about the meanings, purposes, source
of works of art; describe responses and reasons for those responses.
