Timeline for College Planning Freshman Year - Freshman year is the starting block for getting involved in high school. Students have to opportunity to get involved in clubs, sports and community service activities that will enhance their resume for colleges. Students begin to have the opportunity to choose elective classes and should maintain full course-loads. Parents and encouraged to meet with their child�s counselor to schedule for the upcoming year and to ask any questions that may arise. If at any point the student/family has the opportunity to drive through a college campus or make a visit, now is a great time to get started! Sophomore Year � Sophomore year is the year students have more choice in choosing their classes. Students should continue to be involved in clubs, sports and community service activities. If students take Biology and Global Studies and are successful, they should register to take the SAT II Subject Tests. Students are encouraged to begin broad college searches looking at size, location and majors they may be interested in. If at any point the student/family has the opportunity to drive through a college campus or make a visit, now is a great time to get started! Junior Year � September: Students should have their schedules set with challenging courses. September � June: Students should be researching colleges by talking to college representatives, going on college websites and browsing college literature in the Counseling Center. October: Students sit for the PSAT May/June: Students should sit for the SAT. If students were successful in Chemistry, US History, Mathematics, Spanish and/or English they should sit for the SAT II Subject tests Parents should attend the scheduling meeting for their child to ensure they are aware of their child�s diploma type and courses for senior year. June � August (11th � 12th grade): Students should be researching schools, going for campus visits and starting to make a list of schools they would be interested in going to. Students should make contacts with teachers they are interested in having write letters of recommendations (3 letters and don�t forget thank you notes!) Senior Year � September -November: Students should begin gathering/working on college applications. November � January: As application deadlines are approaching, students should turn in applications to the Guidance Office. September � November: Students should sit for the SAT�s AGAIN to try to improve scores. If students have not yet sat for any SAT II Subject tests and they plan on applying to a competitive school they should register ASAP. September � June: Students should stop into the Guidance Office and pick up scholarships as they are received.
