The greatest industrial accident in history happened over twenty years ago in
Bhopal, India.
In the morning hours of December 3, 1984, a holding tank with 43 tons of a
hazardous chemical compound commonly known as MIC overheated and released
toxic heavier-than-air MIC gas mixture, which rolled along the ground through
the surrounding streets killing thousands outright. The transportation system
in the city collapsed and many people were trampled trying to escape. The
gases also injured anywhere from 150,000 to 600,000 people, at least 15,000
of whom later died.
But why did this horrible event happen?
The reasons given by the company, the Indian government, environmental
organizations, and the survivors do not agree EVEN TO THIS DAY, MORE THAN
TWENTY YEARS LATER!
Also, many of the victims who survived and relatives of those who were killed
claim that they have not received fair compensation for their losses. Law
suits and legal actions are still unsettled.
The disaster area is still contaminated and believed by some to be causing
continuing damage to the population of Bhopal.
TOGETHER, LET US TRY TO SORT OUT THE TRUTH OF THIS CATASTROPHIC
EVENT.
