What's Been Happening in Art Class?
Amy Stockfield has been working with our children on projects which are currently being displayed around the school. Since some projects span more than one week and may be up for display currently, we'd like to let you know what's been happening.
To date, these are some of the projects:
Kindergarten
Looked at lines and shapes and made pictures inspired by the Artist Mondrian. They decorated the branches of a 3-D tree with watercolor fall leaves and apples.
First Graders
Used primary color Cray-pas and black paint to create shape chains and practiced mixing colors.
They also learned how to draw a pumpkin and use color to make the pumpkin look round.
Second Graders
Have explored the story "Where the Wild Things Are" and created their own Wild Things. They learned simple perspective in order to draw the inside of a room that is turning into the Jungle.
They also looked at the work of Geroge Rodrigue, known for painting "Blue Dogs". They created monochromatic paintings of animals and used the complementary color to create a monochromatic background.
Third Graders
Looked at the cave paintings in Lascaux France and pretended that they were cave painters.
They also are working on a Superhero project in Conjunction with Red Ribbon week. They learned to create gesture drawings of each other and tried to draw their heros in motion. Their superpowers needed to promote a healthy choice for their future.
Fourth Grade
Learned about continuous line drawing and Looked at the work of Alexander Calder, then they made their own continuous line drawings out of wire.
Students also worked on clay storyteller dolls in the modern tradition of Southwestern Native Americans.
Fifth Grade
Began the year with a review of the principles of color theory and used color pencil to draw a still life from observation.
They created Papel Picado banners as a study of positive and negative space. These banners are a Mexican tradtion that is frequently used in Day of the Dead celebrations.
