Process

You and your partner must work very hard to follow the steps in order! Make
sure you busy bees stay busy! If you need help with a specific step, please
ask a teacher or parent for help.

1. After reading "The Tiny Seed", by Eric Carle as a class, you will be
supplied with a journal in which you will be keeping track of everything that
you do for the next few weeks. This journal will be called your "Botanist
Journal". **PLEASE LOOK AT THE RESOURCE PAGE UNDER NUMBER 1 TO FIND THE
LINKS THAT TALK ABOUT PLANTING SEEDS. We will also be talking about
Botanists in class.
**For your first journal entry, please write:
         1. What the tiny seed needed from the Earth in order to grow.
         2. What season was it?
         3. What happened in the autumn?
*Please draw a picture to illustrate your writing.

2. For your next stop, you will need to research the different parts of a
plant and flower. Your will also need to research the different things that
a plant needs in order to grow healthy! **PLEASE LOOK AT THE RESOURCES PAGE
THE FIND THE LINKS THAT GO ALONG WITH THE PROCESS STEP NUMBER 2 to continue
your journey through the wonderful world of plant life!

3. A plant's life cycle describes how long a plant lives or how long it
takes to grow, flower, and set seed. Plants can be either an annual,
perennial, or biennial. **PLEASE LOOK AT THE RESOURCE PAGE TO FIND THE LINKS
THAT GO ALONG WITH THE PROCESS STEP NUMBER 3 in order to research an annual,
perennial, and biennial plant cycle.
In the writing center, choose a life cycle (annual, perennial, or
biennial) to create a story about. Your story must include:
      1. What type of plant you are writing about
      2. How long the plant lives for
      3. How long it takes to grow
      4. What seasons does it live/die in

***Please make sure your story is creative and not just facts!! Please draw
an illustration to go along with your story.

4. Next, go to the science center and examine the 3 different types of
plants very carefully (Marigolds, Petunias, and Morning Glories) You will be
working with your partner, but you each must have your own recordings.
**LOOK AT THE RESOURCE PAGE TO FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION ON THESE PLANTS! In
your Botanist Journal, you will be recording the following observations-
Please answer the questions for each of the 3 plants:

1. What colors are each plant?
2. Are they big or small?
3. How tall is the plant? (Here you will have to use the ruler in
order to measure the length of the plants. Remember to round
    to the nearest inch.)
4. How wide are the flowers of each of the plants? (Use your
ruler here as well to find out the width.)
5. Where do you think that most of these plants would be found?
(Please refer to the reference page to look at more information
    about these plants.)

5. Plant a Petunia!! Each person will be provided with a plastic cup filled
with soil. You will plant a petunia and take care of it for about 2 weeks.
Every day, you must make an observation in your botanist journal. Make sure
you remember what a plant needs in order to grow, such as plenty of sunlight
and water. **PLEASE REFER TO THE RESOURCE PAGE TO FIND THE LINKS THAT GO
WITH PROCESS STEP NUMBER 5 so that you can learn great indoor planting
skills!!

6. Finally, you will be making a plant mobile and presenting it to the
class! You will receive rice and different shapes of macaroni. You will be
painting them, and then gluing them onto the plate. You can decorate the
plate with other materials as well. You will glue 2 popsicle sticks onto the
bottom of the plate, and then you will glue leaves onto your creation. Make
sure you give your flower a name! You will be provided with strips of paper
so that you can label the parts of your plant! We will then attach string to
the flower and hang them from the ceiling to have our own classroom garden!!
