May is “Better Hearing and Speech Month”!!

Your child and I are having conversations about what this means during speech sessions. This year’s topic is about noise-induced hearing loss. To raise awareness about hearing health, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) developed the “Listen to Your Buds” campaign. The campaign educates students about practicing safe listening habits such as turning down the volume and taking listening breaks when they use personal audio technology so they can avoid the effects of hearing loss. Students often don’t know how to use personal audio technology safely and can harm their hearing as a result. They need the support of parents and teachers to educate them about the safe use of iPods, MP3 players, etc.

On their website www.listentoyourbuds.org/pledge, you can pledge to protect your child’s hearing from loud noise, teach your child not to listen to music too loud or for too long, and also share the message about safe listening and the importance of hearing health with family and friends (via twitter, facebook, email, etc.).

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is also sponsoring a drawing contest for students 10 years of age or younger. Concepts for drawings must be gleaned from the “Listen to Your Buds” campaign. Drawing contest submissions must be finished by Monday, May 14th. This year’s first-place art work will be used to create the downloadable screen saver for Better Hearing and Speech Month 2013. All winning entries will be featured on the ASHA website and winners can receive a MP3 player and BHSM merchandise. If your child is interested in entering the drawing contest, they will need to see me for a release form.

Thank you for your continued support and interest in your child’s speech and language development!!
