Welcome to the fifth grade website!  It has been recently updated and changed.  You will find helpful links for what your child is working on in class, the supply list, information about each class, and much more.

It has been awhile since the site has been updated and I extend my apologies.  I don't know where the time went!  The students have been working very hard and are making excellent progress.  Our current units of study are listed below.

Reading:  The students are reading books in small groups that involve discussions and reading responses.  We are also reading tall tales.

ELA:  Your children are becoming avid writers and work on their free choice writing daily.  We are also implementing the 6+1 writing traits as a way of assessing and improving our own writing.  We have looked at idea formation and organization and are now focusing on word choice.  Specifically, we are writing our own versions of a tall tale.

Math:  We are currently investigating fractions.  We are learning to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with different denominators.

Science:  We are studying catastrophic events.  To build our background knowledge students have been busy reading about different types of catastrophic events and creating posters that they will share with their classmates. After break we will be using an STC science kit to further investigate the causes and fine intracacies of catastrophic events.  The kit is inquiry based which requires students to "do" science rather than be passive learners.

I will continue to update more frequently and do not hesitate to contact me with any questions at jsenatore@menands.org
