FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
Will my child be dissecting anything in science this year? Maybe...the only thing that we dissect is a flower, and that will either be in 7th or 8th grade science this year. We will not be doing any animal dissections at any grade level this year. Can I still come and join soccer even if I missed the first practice? Of course! Soccer practice is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3-4 p.m. Anyone in seventh or eighth grader who comes out for soccer will receive playing time. However, you must come to a practice by the end of the second full week of school to be on the team.. How is my child doing in science? Whenever you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me at the school at 465-4561 extension 164. This will get you to my voicemail where you may leave a message for me. You may also click on the mailboxl icon in the upper right-hand corner of my homepage to send me an e-mail. You may also e-mail me directly at lherrmann@menands.org. What resources are available for test preparation? For the Earth Science class, I have ordered and distribute copies of A Brief Review in Earth Science. This book contains short summary passages and multiple Regents questions that students can use to help prepare for tests. For general science students Sciencesaurus by Great Source Education Group is a great reference. What can I do to help my child learn science concepts? Flashcards are a great resource for learning science. Science concepts are usually closely tied to the vocabulary that defines them, and just like learning a new language, knowing science vocabulary will help your chuld to more easily learn and excel in the course. Why is soccer only available for seventh and eighth graders this year? I have limited the team to seventh and eighth graders at this time due to numbers. In prior years, I have had up to 44 students came out for soccer between fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. I am unable to coach a soccer team that is so large by myself. Also, I had to split the team into two squads, which really limited each player's time on the field, and I really want everyone to get equal playing time as often as possible this season. When are you available for my child to get extra help? I am available most days during your child's recess and lunch time (12:48-1:29), during ninth period when your child has study hall (2:14-2:55) and after school on most days (3:00-3:55) unless I have a meeting. Simply have your child touch base with me to be certain that I do not have a meeting or another commitment so that I may help him or her during some free time. |
