Soap Crayons
Materials
1 3/4 c Ivory Snow; (powder)
50 drops food coloring
1/4 c water
Mix water & soap flakes together. Add food coloring & put mixture into an ice cube tray. Allow to
harden. Break or cut into pieces. Fun to write with on the tub when bathing & face & hands!!!
Soap Sud Paint
Materials
1/2 cup of dry detergent, or a capful of liquid detergent
2 tablespoons of liquid starch
brown wrapping paper
poster paints or food coloring
an egg beater
a mixing bowl
an old newspaper
a spoon
Beat the detergent and the liquid starch with an egg beater in a mixing bowl. Beat until it is like thick
frosting. Put the mixtures into different jars and then add a few drops of food coloring into the jars
and stir. Lay down the newspaper to work on Use the paint like finger paints on the brown paper. If
the soapsuds thicken, add a little more starch and beat with a spoon. Be careful to allow plenty of
time to dry.
Fingerpaint
Materials:
Soap Flakes
Water
Food Coloring
Mixer
Add small amounts of water to soap flakes until the desired consistency is obtained. Add food
coloring. Use on fingerpaint paper on table top.
Play Dough
Materials
1 cup salt
2 cups flour
1 cup water
2 tablespoons alum
2 tablespoon salad oil
food coloring
Mix together until smooth. Add food coloring of your choice. Seal in a resealable plastic baggie.
Pumpkin Pie Playdough
Materials:
5 1/2 cups flour
2 cups salt
8 teaspoons cream of tartar
3/4 cup oil
1 container (1 1/12 ounces) pumpkin pie spice
Orange food coloring (2 parts yellow, 1 part red)
4 cups water
Directions:
Mix all of the ingredients together. Cook and stir over medium heat until all lumps disappear. Knead
the dough on a floured surface until it is smooth. Store in an airtight container. Place a batch of this
dough in your playdough center. Add some fall cookie cutters, small pie tins (save from pot pies),
and rolling pins to the area.(Invite your little ones to make fall cookies or pumpkin pies. Remind
them that these goodies only smell good. No tasting please!)
Smelly Playdough
Follow the recipe above but add liquid flavorings for smell
Rubbery Playdough
Materials
2 cups baking soda
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup cornstarch
Mix with a fork until smooth. Boil over med. heat until thick. Spoon onto plate or wax paper.
Chocolate Play Dough
Materials
2 cups water
1/2 cup salt
2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1/3 cup cocoa
2 cups Flour
In a medium-sized pot, bring the water and salt to a boil. Stir in the remaining ingredients; then
allow the mixture to cool slightly. Knead the dough until it reaches a smooth doughy consistency.
Then store the dough in a resealable plastic bag.
Bread Dough
Cut the crusts off slices of bread and mix with diluted white glue. Form into shapes, animals, etc.
When dry, paint and/or shellac
Kool-Aid Play Dough
Materials
2 1/2 to 3 cups flour
2 cups boiling water with 1 pkg. kool-aid (any flavor)
3 T corn oil
1/2 cup salt
1 T alum
Mix ingredients and knead with flour (may take up to 1 cup). Use more if the dough draws moisture
in high humidity. Keeps well, nice fragrance, very colorful and very flexible.
Edible Peanutbutter Playdough
Ingredients
3 1/2 cups peanut butter
4 cups confectioners' sugar
3 1/2 cups honey
4 cups dry milk powder
Direction
In a bowl,cream together peanut butter and sugar. Then beat in honey and fold in milk powder.
Divide into 15 equal portions and refrigerate or freeze until ready to use.
Peanutbutter Playdough
18 oz. peanut butter
6 tbsps. honey
Non-fat dry milk
Cocoa for flavor
Mix all ingredients, adding enough dry milk to give make dough pliable. Shape, decorate with edible
treats, and eat!
Gingerbread Playdough
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
Spices: allspice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg
1 cup water
1 tsp. vegetable oil
Mix dry ingredients with spices to get color you like (smells good too) Mix water and vegetable oil
together, add to dry ingredients, stir. Cook the mixture for 2-3 minutes in a pot, stirring frequently.
The dough will pull away from sides of pan and clump together. Knead the dough until soft, smooth,
and pliable. Cool. Store in air tight container such as plastic baggie.
Snow Dough
1 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
1 Tbsp. oil
1 c. water
2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 - 3 tsp. dry white tempera paint (optional)

Mix everything except glitter in a pan, heat over low heat, stir constantly until dough thickens and
pulls away from pan. Remove from pan. Knead until smooth, add glitter, till dough sparkles like
snow. Store in plastic baggie.
Self Hardening Salt Clay

Materials
1 1/2 cups of salt
4 cups of flour
1 1/2 cups of water
1 teaspoon of alum (if not baked)
Mix all of dry ingredients in a non-metal bowl; slowly add the water When well mixed, knead the
dough. Add water if too dry, flour if too wet. If you do not add alum, bake the shapes at 200 F for
about 50 minutes.
Colored Glue Recipe
Materials Needed:
White Glue
Food Coloring
Save your money next time you go shopping for art supplies. It is very easy to make your own fancy,
colored glues! Simply add a bit of food coloring to regular school glue.
Silly Putty 1
Material
1/2 cup liquid starch
1/2 cup elmers glue
Mix starch and glue together. Store in a closed container in the refrigerator.
Silly Putty 2
Materials
2 parts White Glue (Elmer's)
1 part Sta-Flo Liquid Starch
Mix well.If you use Elmer's School Gule instead of regular white it doesn't bounce or pick up pictures.
Sidewalk Chalk

Materials
2 C. Water
2 C. Plaster of Paris
2 Tbl Tempera Paint (Wet or Dry)
Toilet Paper Tubes with duct tape over one end
Combine and stir together all ingredienta. Let stand a few minutes. Place tubes on cookie sheet lined
with foil or wax paper. Pour mixture into holders, let stand until semi-firm. Remove holders and let
dry completely - ready to use in about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs. (reminder, never pour plaster down sink)
Cinnamon Applesauce Hearts
Materials
1 lb jar sweetened applesauce
8 oz cinnamon
Drain 1# jar of SWEETENED applesauce overnight. Add 8 ounces of cinnamon to this and mix
together well. Pat into a ball, press hard to solidify and mix. Then pat out in 1 cup units onto wax
paper, push to 1/4" thickness and cut with cookie cutters. Dry.
