| Homework will be starting October 14th. Please remember that your child's homework will reflect
his/her ability groups in the classroom. Your child may not have the same homework as his/her friend.
Homework is a time to practice things we have already learned or are learning in the classroom. I do not
expect homework to take a child a long time to complete. If it is taking a while please let me know so
we can adjust what is being sent home. Thank you for your help!
Things to look for:
1. Your child will receive 1 poem weekly. The poem that is sent home has NOT been practiced in the
classroom. So your child may need help reading the poem the first couple times. It is important for
you to do the nightly activities checked off for your child to do. Practicing the different literacy skills
will help your child become more confident in reading. The time spent doing this activity can be
counted toward the 15 min reading log time. These poems can be kept in the poetry section of our
FISH FOLDER.
2. Try to practice our list 1 Word Wall Words (Dolch Words list) every night. This can be counted
toward the 15 min reading log time.
3. Activity based on your child's ability.
***************IMPORTANT REMINDER***************
Remember kids learn by doing. Video games and TV are not the best ways to model or encourage
doing or learning. Please limit your child's time on these activities to an hour or less per day. Your
child's learning can be better developed by participating in creative dramatic play, playing with
construction manipulatives such as blocks or Legos, or drawing. Allowing your child access to paper,
crayons, pencils, markers etc. will help with pre-writing skills. It helps develop the small muscles so
your child will have an easier time with writing/printing. Many times boy's large motor
muscles develop first and are therefore used more than the small motor muscles.
Reading for 10-20 minutes is a daily assignment. You should be keeping track of your child's
reading on the September reading calendar. Your child may read the poems in the Poetry Fun
Section of the FISH Folder, make an environmental print book to be read at home, practice reading
our sight words from List 1, 2, 3 or read the books that are being sent home in your child's Fish Folder.
Practice tying shoes and zippering coats.
