How does my child test into the ESL Program?

New York State uses a test called the LAB-R in order to determine if a 
bilingual student needs ESL.

How much time does the student spend in ESL?

A student who tests at the beginning or intermediate proficient levels must 
have 72 minutes of ESL per day.  An advanced student only needs 36 minutes.  
Kindergarten students only come for 36 minutes.

How can my child test out of ESL or move up a level?

We use the NYSESLAT - the New York State English as a Second Language 
Achievement Test each spring to assess all students' progress.
