Introduction

On Wall Street, the common phrase of "fire one person and buy 3 computers"
has been born from this shift in mentality. A shift that is far from being
over. Further cost reductions have become an absolute necessity as business
owners and managers are discovering that the pressure on margins is becoming
increasingly intense.

A growing trend in business is towards entrepreneurship. Woman and
minorities have shown the largest growth in new business start-ups. Many of
us will eventually go into business for ourselves. According to an Advocacy
study of businesses over the 1989-1992 period, about 66 percent of businesses
with employees remain open at least two years after startup, 49.6 percent are
open at least four years, and 39.5 percent are open after six years.
