On Wall Street, the common phrase of "fire one person and buy 3 computers" has been born from this shift in mentality. A shift that is far from being over. Further cost reductions have become an absolute necessity as business owners and managers are discovering that the pressure on margins is becoming increasingly intense. A growing trend in business is towards entrepreneurship. Woman and minorities have shown the largest growth in new business start-ups. Many of us will eventually go into business for ourselves. According to an Advocacy study of businesses over the 1989-1992 period, about 66 percent of businesses with employees remain open at least two years after startup, 49.6 percent are open at least four years, and 39.5 percent are open after six years.
