Objectifs

talk about what you do in school

talk about what you and your friends do after school

identify and shop for school supplies

talk about what you don’t do

tell what you and others like and don’t like to do

Les verbes réguliers en -er au présent

Talking about people’s activities

 1. A word that expresses an action or a state is a verb. Parler (to speak), écouter (to listen to), and aimer (to like) are verbs in the infinitive form. They are called regular verbs because they all follow a regular pattern. Their infinitives end in -er.

 2. French verbs change endings with each subject. To form the stem to which the endings are added, you drop the -er from the infinitive.

 Infinitive    Stem

parler          parl -

ecouter        ecout

aimer          aim-

PARLER                               AIMER

je parle                                     j’ aime

tu parles                                   tu aimes

il/elle parle                               il/elle aime

nous parlons                            nous aimons

vous parlez                              vous aimez

ils/elles parlent                         ils aiment

La négation des articles indéfinis

Talking about what you don’t do

In the negative, the indefinite articles un, une, and des change to de (or d’).

Affirmatif Négatif

Julie regarde un CD.               Eric ne regarde pas de CD.

Julie regarde une vidéo.          Eric ne regarde pas de vidéo.

Julie regarde des photos.         Eric ne regarde pas de photos.

Verbe + infinitif

Discussing likes and dislikes

In French when the verbs aimer, adorer, and détester are followed by another verb, the second verb is in the infinitive form.

Il aime rigoler.

J’adore écouter la radio.

On déteste travailler.

In a negative sentence, the ne… pas goes around the first verb.

Vous n’aimez pas travailler?

Chapitre 2

Les cours et les profs

 Objectifs

In this chapter you will learn to:

describe people and things

talk about more than one person or thing

tell what subjects you take in school and express some opinions about them

speak to people formally and informally

talk about French-speaking people in the United States

Le pluriel: articles, noms et adjectifs

Talking about more than one person or thing

 1. The articles you know (un/une, le/la/l’) are singular markers. The plural forms of these articles are plural markers. Study the following.

LES ARTICLES INDÉFINIS                                           LES ARTICLES DÉFINIS

Masculin                                                                     Féminin

Singulier         Pluriel                                                 Singulier         Pluriel

un garçon        des garçons                                        une fille              des filles

un ami             des amis                                             une amie            des amies

un collège        des collèges                                        une école           des écoles

2. In French, you form the plural of most nouns by adding an s. This s, however, is not pronounced. It is the article les or des that lets you know the noun is plural: un prof des profs/; la prof les profs/.

 3. When a noun is plural, any adjective that describes or modifies it must also be in the plural. You form the plural of most adjectives in French by adding an s. The s is not pronounced.
